Which knife is most adaptly suited for speed openings?

Now I'm not talking about Emerson's Wave, or the Kershaw torsion bar assisted opening, or any autos.

I'm curious as to what you guys think is the most well designed folder (blade shape, opening hole or stud, clip placement, handle design etc.) that can be opened very quickly because of these design strengths, regardless of who's doing the opening ;).

Out of all of the folders that I own, the easiest and fastest manual action to open would be either a MT Socom or Socom Elite. You can just snap them open with a flip of the wrist. Again that is based on the knives I have owned or currently own.

Oh, I forgot to add...most adaptly suited for an out of the pocket speed opening. Most good knives when in your hand can be easily opened with a flick of the wrist. I know a lot of this has to do with the person actually doing the opening but there must be some kind of design features on certain knives that make a fast opening starting from the pocket easier.

Gee..since I can't pick an Emerson I gotta go with my Spydie Wegner with a couple of small zip ties through the hole. it's INCREDIBLY smooth and opens more dependably than my P-SARK.

I think I'd take the Tip-up Spydies even without my zip ties though. in order of my favorite openers I'd say the Spydie hole is number one, with the disk being number two, and the various styles of thumbstuds coming in last. But, that's just my meager perception...

I'd say a tip down Spyderco. With tip down you can easily grap the large opening hole strait from the pocket and then Spydie drop it without having to change your hand position.

Spyderco Police is very easy to open because it is big and doesn't require any finesse in handling.

Honeywell said it. IMHO, a tip-down Spydie can be gripped between thumb and forefinger and Spydie-dropped into action in a flash.;)

If pure speed is a true issue, IOW if your life and not just your image depends on it, get a fixed blade. Folders are slow, even when fast. Add to this gloves in the winter, adrenaline, fear, physical contact, etc. and you are in trouble.

Of course, I am partially playing the devil's advocate here, but there is a lot of truth here, too. Think of two gun fighters facing off. Only in this case one has only to draw and shoot while the other has to draw, turn a safety off, and then shoot. All other things being equal, who is likely to go home?

Of all my folders, I can open my Spyderco Military the fastest. The heavy blade and oversized hole make it very easy to open quickly.

I would go with the Camillus CUDA Maxx for the same reasons the M-16 was proposed above. Flippers are an amazingly effective way to open a blade quickly.

I rank my Spyderco Military as being the fastest to deploy.

The oversized Spydie Hole requires just a pinch for retrieval and a Spydie drop snaps open, and locks, the 4" blade in the blink of an eye. ;) You're wearing gloves?? The larger Trademarked Hole in the Military was designed specifically for this purpose. :D

I am going to cast my vote for the full size AFCK. I have never had one of these that you would actually have to use the hole to open if you didnt want to. They have all opened so smooth and fast that all you have to do is snap your wrist and it's open.

...A bali of course! In the right hands a bali can be opened a number of ways equally as quikly as any traditional folder.

And of course they just look better too.;)

I can't seem to see the difference in time it takes for a knife to open once it's properly seated in your hand.

Now, talk about a faster draw from pockt, waistband, or sheath... then we got a big difference.

Small Size Category: Benchmade 94x. (Easy to position index finger and thumb on Axis lock and pull back on it (the lock) as the knife is being extracted from your pocket. Opening the blade is then a mere flick of the wrist as the knife travels towards its target. A nice bonus is the knife also closes very fast on the way back into your pocket).

Medium Size Category: Spyderco Military. (Tip-down configuration allows for easy indexing of thumb into extra-large opening hole prior to the knife being extracted from the pocket when deploying in a conventional deployment--a thumb flick. For variety the blade can be pinched for a "Spydie Drop" maneuver).

Large Size Category: Camillus Cuda Maxx. (Oh yeah. Tap on the flipper and give it a whirl).

Thought for the day:

It's not the Big that beats the Small; it's the Fast that beats the Slow.

I've found that anything from Micro-Tech opens really FUC#@%* fast. Don't ask me why, 'cause I use 'em, not design them. :D
