Looking for suggestions on which knife to buy for field dressing deer. I like blades that are around 4" long and drop point. Like fixed blades but am not opposed to folder. Needs to be easy to sharpen - it doesn't have to gut 5 deer before sharpening - one would be fine. I like the looks of some of the Gerbers. Would spend max of $ 125.00. Thanks for reading and responding.

welcome to BF!

how about cold steel master hunter in carbon V? about $60-70. some of CS stuff is not very good, but this is one of their good ones.

also check bark river knife and tool......all their knives are excellent....i have the fox river in A2 steel drop point 4" and plenty of handle materials to choose from....about $90-130. these are about the easiest knives to sharpen because of their convex grind.

Also check out Swamp Rat Knife Works, www.swamprat.com, the Howling Rat, Bog Dog, or the Safari Skinner may be just what you need. Best warranty going and all in your price range.

Don't own any, but have not heard anything negative about Bark River Knives.

Good luck!

Rob

Ditto on the other suggestions. The howling rat would be the way to go in my book. It meets all of your criteria and probably WILL gut 5 deer before you need to sharpen it.

Wegner Pro Hunter! That's what its made for! I have one, its very well made a really good product. Here's what they look like:

Save some money and get a Buck Vanguard, their Alpha Hunter is also good. If you want to spend more/get a tougher knife get a Becker Companion or a Howling Rat. If you're thinking folder the Buck 110 is readily available at Wal-Mart and is a LOT of knife for the money.

The Swamp Rat Bog Dog gets my vote: 4.5" D2 drop point, a very good heat treat, and an exceptionally comfortable Res C handle.

I second the buck vanguard. we (bass pro) used to sell them with ATS-34. you might find one of them at one of the stores if you are close. they also make the alpha with rosewood handles and elk stag handles with ATS-34

My father believe it or not lately has been using a Kershaw Scallion and a Sagen's Hunter Field Saw, together they are well under the $125 you're willing to spend and if you lose either in the field somehow then you aren't crushed. I really wish I could get him to use a computer, he's a great guy.

The Gerber Freeman Exchange-A-Blade Knife goes for about $75..
