I'm having trouble making a decision. I know I should buy both but I just can't afford it right now. :D

Which knife should I buy? I am between and Becker Necker and a TOPS wolf pup. I have a BK1 and really like Becker knifes. I also have a TOPS harpoon and I like that one also. Anyone who has either or both knifes that can tell me their opinion I would apprecitate it.

Thanks,
KR

the only t.o.p.s. knife i own is a harpoon.. that is a great little tool.... so i can't say much for the wolf pup.. but i have had a becker necker for a few years now.... i really like it... it is an excellant knife for the $$$$...

the 0170-6c carbon steel holds a great edge and it is easy to sharpen in the field.... i added some thumb grooves on the spine and wrapped some p-cord around the handle to give it a little better grip..
i didn't like the sheath it came with, so i sent the knife away to sharpshooter(reid), to have a new sheath made... www.kydexsheath.com

To me the answer to your question is simple. I love my Becker Necker. It is a great little knife; strong and tough with great edge holding and edge retention. But in addition to that, keep in mind that there is the possibility that Becker may have to change the steel they use, 0170-6c (0170-6c and 50100B is the same steel so this is the current Carbon V) or that the quality of the steel may suffer as a consequence on personnel reduction at Camillus.

Translation: Get the Becker NOW before any changes in steel or quality occurs.:D

you have a very good point there preacher man.... i didn't really take that into consideration.....

Here is my 2 cents worth:
I own 2 tops:
1) Micarta Scalpel - absolutely hate the knife -- Nothing good to say about it
2) interceptor - Not real fond of it
I would like to own a harpoon but feel they are overpriced. As far as the wolf pup I have never had any experience with it.
I owned a Becker Necker once but gave it away, Here is why. I dont like thick knives and its blade was too thick for me. Mine was one of the preorders and it came very dull and I never could get an edge on it. I also found that the wire cutter would dig into the palm of my hand which made it very uncomfortable to use. Like others have said its a great tool steel and and made by a good company at a great price.
Personally I would look to find another necker or at least try to handle both before placing an internet order. Everyones opinions are different and you may love both the knives you are looking at. I wish you the best of luck with your purchase.

After looking at both, I'm sold on the Becker Necker. I love that steel (as it turns out, my favorite knives are mostly that steel, and mostly made by Camillus) and that's a really neat design.

Gibson, I ordered my B-Necker last week, should be here, this week, hopefully. I was looking for a compact fixed blade for my PSK and general "not in the open" carry when I'm not using a pack or taking a big chopper.

What made my decision. was the overwhelming response in support of the Necker. Saw many pictures of guys with their neckers in the woods, woodwork they've done with them, and 99.9% satisfaction in their replies.

I think we will be very pleased. It appears it be a good value for the dollar and fill that space between folder and 7" blade. Plus, for compactness, how much flatter can a knife get?

I kick myself frequently for selling my Becker Necker (I had to fund a speeding ticket).

the last winter that I had it, it saw some extreme use. my driveway is @ slight slant. I park by the edge of the woods, @ the bottom of the slant. the guy who plows my driveway (and is horrible @ it but he has fun), plows everything down into the slant. we had a string of very crappy icy slushy wet weather. he plowed it all down around my car. the next day, my car was frozen to the ground in 4 inches of ice. wouldn't budge an inch. he couldn't tow me out with his Sierra. wouldn't budge. I made efforts to chip away around my tires with a shovel. just wasn't sharp enough. too big too. so out comes the Becker Necker! I chipped thru nearly all the ice around one tire. not all of it 'cause I gave up that pain in the ass plan. ha. eventually a tractor had to tow me out. but the Becker Necker took it very gracefully. no damage to the tip @ all. the next day there was some rust on the edge (the driveway is salted way more than necessary). a 0000 steel wool took it off in 30 seconds and there was only one small and shallow spot of pitting.

I do agree it's a little too thick, but I wonder if I would've been able to chip thru all that ice otherwise. and it still cuts well enough to do what you need done, with some effort.

OK guys,

Thanks, I'm going to order the necker. I think it will be the perfect knife between my spyderco dragonfly and Becker BK1 for camping/survival kit.

Thanks again,
KR

I recieved my necker yesterday. I was suprised at how small the grip was. Seems like a good piece of steel I will wrap with para cord. It came razor sharp but the only odd thing is the curved part of the blade is not sharpened correctly. The straight part of the cutting surface is perfect. But the curved part transitions into a kind of bevel. It is still pretty sharp but its more of a bevel instead of a v. I'll probably have to clean it up at some point.

I just receive my necker too. As kr1 noted, it came shaving sharp. Seems like a great little knife to carry for those trips where my bigger fixed blade might frighten the public.

Does anyone know if a neck knife is legal for carry in CA? I could have sworn that I read they are not, but I can't track down an actual law.

Also, what do people use to hang the knife with? 550 paracord around my neck gives me the heebee-jeebees.

i have an ever so growing collection of neck knives and small fixed blades... i usually don't wear them as much as i'd like to... i usaully wear one in the woods, around my house, and at the archery range....i live in a small little mtn. town, and there are a lot of folks that wear their fixed blades on their belts.. i don't think too many folks would say anything.....

i also use p-cord and the normal dog-tag style chain when wearing.... with the p-cord, i don't tie the ends together, they are melted together and then taped, just in case the sheath needs to go in a hurry....

bulgron.. you're just right over the hill from me... my wife works for the s.c. valley water distcict.... nice to see some more local folks on here..

I think I get it but pictures :D :D ;) I'd love to actually see what you did with the file. Did you just go across or cut a diamond pattern. Lets see.

I just read through that, and I didn't see anything that made me thing neck knives are illegal. Not that I really intend to carry one around hanging from my neck unless I'm traveling deep in the woods.

lol. Where I live, people would absolutely freak if they saw someone walking around with a belt knife. I so want to move away from here.

Ahh, good tip. Thanks.

Yep. I actually lived in the Santa Cruz mountains for a while ... was in Boulder Creek for over a year. Too bad my wife is stuck in the valley or I'd at a minimum move back up there.

bulgron--- i live in felton, which isn't too far from boulder creek... i do a little bowhunting on a friends property over in that area...

my wife works for the santa clara valley water district and has to commute over the hill everyday....:grumpy: that's where all the $$$ at....

drop me a line if you're ever around these parts... allscared@yahoo.com i jhave a nice selection of traditinal bows and knives to look at....

i'm going to ask my dad about the neck knife laws, he is a ca. state parole agent.... i'm sure he's pretty familiar with them....:o

cheers... mike
