Which knife to carry in my truck?

I remember reading in Tactical Knives (think the artcile was called Survival On The Road) of places that you cols store a knife tactically in a car. It had listed that you can use a neck knife that's hung over the rear view mirror or hang on the turn signal and have it draped over the top to the stearing column so that it is an easy reach near our keys. It also has an exaple of if the knife had a sheath that could be "wedged" between the ashtray while it is closed. Another example it had was if it had a strap that had velcro it, you could strap it to your sun visor or to your door handle.

The ashtray carry might not work because I'm gonna have a CB in my truck (when my Dad and I get everything running right). The door handle carry definatly won't work because it won't fit right like it's supposed too.

I'm 15 and will be turning 16 on October 4th of next year and will be driving an 86' F-250 4WD. My primary use of the truck will be driving it to school, hunting, rdding around town, and the occasional 500 mi. trip to Ft. Pierce, Florida to see my Grandparents.

I've been thinking of getting a CRT STIFF K.I.S.S to have in in my truck. I'm open to other suggestions and other places that I can store a knife in my truck.

Since your 16 I would recommend some place visible. The police might not like to find a knife "stashed" some where. Not that you would be pulled over, but some times it does happen. Also with the "zero tolerance" weapons "fever" I would think twice about any knife in your truck. Now a Cold Steel shovel might work.

Blades

If I were to carry the shovel, where could I put it? Behind my feet next to the seat (bench seats) or behind the seat?

Just a thought. How about a Spyderco folder? If it doesnt have to be a fixed blade that is. On sun visors, I have seen some with elastic strips around them. You could clip a knife to it. If it was something like a pro-venator then it would also be a suitable knife for hunting. That way if you get pulled over and have to tell a police officer that its your hunting blade, you wont be lying. Also the pro-venator is something that you could slip in your pocket easily if you want when getting out. Good luck on deciding. Let us know what ya come up with.

I keep an axe in the bed of mine at all times. Pretty handy to have sometimes.

I have an Estwing Hatchet that I could keep behind the seat, and my unlce is making me a bowie that has a double blood groove and the knife is about as long as Crocadile DunDee's or even longer. I'm gonna have a plastic armrest/console on the bench seat. I might have a small knife in the armrest (underneath). I keep flipping through Blade to see what moslty apeals to me.
I know that they have drug dogs that inspect vehicles in the school parking lot, so I'll have to put my "toys" behind the seat before I get out and lock it up.

Just put the shovel behind the seat of your truck with your other tools. Your screwdrivers, tire iron, and towing chain. You know, emergency items.

Blades

If your going to use the truck 4x4ing and hunting, I would keep a midsized fixed blade(4-5" blade)and a good hatchet like the estwing you talked about both behind the seat. Make sure you have a way to carry them both too, belt, back pack etc.
Also, if you were to get pulled over, you might be better off with it behind the seat. Having it stashed in the armrest would give the impression that you wanted to use it as a weapon. Behind the seat and the explanation of needing it for hunting would make them take it better in my opinion.A tire iron could be considered a weapon if its in your lap when the cop gets to the window, but they could care less if its behind the seat. And in most routine traffic stops, you aren't going to have your truck searched.

I was just thinking of getting a SpyderCard to keep in my wallet. The school never has any checks on guns or knives (country type school) and if they do, they'll never think to check a person's wallet. I know that I'll never carry it to school, but in public, I will.

Yeah, your right about the usual trafic stops to check licenses. It might be the best thing to keep one behind the seat.

Airwolf,

I hate to be a wet blanket(Don't you hate it when people say that because you know what's coming.

)but with the current attitude toward knives on school property I don't think you need a knife in your truck while at school. I don't know about things in Alabama, but up here high schoolers have had trouble from keeping knives and even defense sprays in their vehicles. I would hate for you to have any unnecessary problems.

I would think that a good folding hunter or other medium to large lockback in a belt sheath would serve you well as a "town and country" knife.

The shovel is a great idea I carry a military surplus tri-fold in my truck.

Good Luck!

My knives are just like rabbits---they keep multiplying!!

I have a CRKT Bear Claw clipped to the seat belt in my truck for quick access.....works for me.

It's not too big, but not too small..... sturdy, sharp, comfortable in the hand, not too expensive ($25).

Unless you are trained in the proper use of edged weapons, just get a good 3-4" folder for daily use and put a baseball bat, ball, and glove in the cab. Keep in mind that carrying a weapon you don't know how to use properly is an invitation to having it used against you as a suppository.

There are at least two purposes to keeping a knife handy in your car or truck:1)defensive /tactical; 2) emergency/utility. In the event of an accident, your own or someone else's, you may need to cut yourself or someone else out of a seatbelt or smash thru a window. Accordingly, you would need one tough knife, and one you could get to and use even if injured. This runs a little bit against the tactical considerations because, for one thing, for that purpose you would not want the knife to be too visible and accessible to a potential adversary.
Myself, I used to have a 5" custom Freeman between the seat and the console out of view but easily accessible thru a lanyard. I recently changed to a Busse 7" blade which may be less usable for defense but more suitable for emergency. For defence I'm usually wearing something tactical anyway.
Of the two purposes, you can tell the police, quite honestly, that the predominant purpose of the knife is emergency/utility.
Which knife and where you put depends on the layout of your truck. Just be sure you can reach it if you need to, and that an adversary would have difficulty in seeing it or grabbing it. Experiment and practice.

Sorry, just fixing an inexplicable double post. Must be Y2k

Stanly utility knife. The kind with the replaceable razor blades. cheap if stolen, sharp all the time and most of all it does not look like a weapon.

For seatbelt cutting, they actually make a device that looks like one of those contained-blade letter openers. Do a search for "seatbelt cutter" on yahoo and you'll find them. (credit to Eye, got this from his website). For window smashing, utility knife, and hunting knife, I doubt you're going to find one knife that won't raise the eyebrows of school officials or LEO's. I carry a Buck Nighthawk in my truck, along with a 4-D cell maglite that will smash out any window yet made. I was carrying a double-edged EK Commando dagger, but quickly realized that it would get me into serious trouble with the law and was pretty useless in an emergency. So I'd go with: one decent sized fixed blade for utility and hunting, kept behind the seat; one big mag lite for many, many reasons, and I'd carry a good folder like the spyderco Wegner which goes into the glove box when you pull into the school parking lot. But you didn't hear this from me....

Oh yeah, the Glock entrenching tool is an awesome thing to carry, too.

I have a Wedge bungee corded to my steering column for opening envelopes, junk food bags, etc. and a Spyderco rescue clipped to my sun visor if I'mever in an emergency situation.

Airwolf,

Lots of good advice here to consider. One other possibility that I haven't seen mentioned, is the soon to be re-introduced Becker "entry tool". Camillus will be bringing it out shortly in a bit longer length than the original and with much better steel. The original was a favorite with LEOs and SpecOps folks. Best description I can give is that it is both a knife and an extremely sturdy prybar. It would easily serve as an emergency extraction tool and, as such, is destined for my vehicle when released.
