Which knife to take to the sandbox

Well I was just curious out of these 2 knives which one would you take to Iraq? The first one is a Tom Brown Tracker #2 , Or a Buck Strider Fixed Blade Tanto w/ Serrations. I am just curious on what some people have to say.

Either would be fine. As much as I like the Tom Brown Tracker, the Buck Strider seems like it would be of more use to you and a little more appropriate for the environment. But like I said, either would be fine.

Serrations *might* come in handy but a tanto tip is going to cripple it's ability.

Well in one sense I think the tracker would do great but the Buck Strider looks like it was made for those conditions.

Neither. Get yourself a leatherman or a SAK and be done with it. You'll not be in need of a larger blade in such territory.

I'd bring both if I could carry the extra weight. Use the rifle and a proper shooting stance for everything else that should arise. I think you'll find that most troops don't carry a DF class blade in the sandbox.

Depends on what you're doing........

Really, It depends on what your Commander will allow you to carry. Early on in the war, nobody really cared what soldiers carried. Nowadays, Commanders and SGMs have become much more politically correct. Most units have a policy of some sort on the carry of non-issue blades.

Even the civilian contract companies are starting to limit blade size for their employees.

For the most part, you won't need much more than a good Multi Tool and a Med/Large Folder.

Whatever you decide on, take what you feel most comfortable with, But keep in mind that having an expensive blade lost or stolen is a bitch.

Happy Hunting.

My nieces husband just got back about a month ago from his tour. He told me his Leatherman multi-tool was all he used. He stopped carrying his fixed blade after the first month. Did'nt need it and he was already carrying too much stuff on his web gear.

You're probably correct, nevertherless it bothers me to see someone stating this as a fact like they can see the future.

You are aware there have been at least two documented cases of close quarters combat in theatre being resolved with a knife right? One was a fairly cheap switchblade in fact.

Having been infantry myself ( not there) I realize weight is very important and I'm not stating one should always equip themselves with fighting knives. I will say it's not prudent to tell a deploying soldier that they will never need a knife, just a SAK or multitool. Joe

I think he wants us to pick between the two has already decided on.

I like the Tracker. You probably wouldn't go wrong with either! Watch yourself over there - Our family always keeps you guys in our prayers.

I would say carry a multi-tool first, whether it be a Leatherman, Vic or Wenger SAK, or SOG.

Then, take whatever fixed blade makes you smile. Most of the time (and I hope most would agree with me here), we spend our time admiring our knives....sharpening them in search of the scariest, most frightening, most blood-curdling horrifically sharp edge.... showing others how easily they cut this or that.... and sheathing and unsheathing the beasts. Then we go camping, hiking, or hunting, and use them for several minutes before it's back to admiring them. (Am I the only fool here who does this :D )

So, in my opinion, consider weight, policy and regulations, etc.... then get the knife that makes you the horniest.

EDIT: Ah yes, Bulbboy, what a reminder. Keep yourself safe and come back alive and ready to buy more knives. And remember, despite the all news coverage that the whiners and haters get, there are many millions who cherish and appreciate what our soldiers do...here and abroad.

Not a big fan of tanto blades, if its a choice between these two and you all ready own them I'd go with the Tom Brown; I would be leary of taking a high dollar knife, or anything that may cause distractions or attract undue attention. That said, weight seems like it might be an issue. CS haters aside, a Master Hunter in Carbon V would be a great choice; they can still be had for a reasonable price, something to consider if lost/stolen, etc. Good, all purpose 4 1/2" blade, good steel, weighs in around 6.5 oz.

If the sandbox is where you are heading, I will also take this opportunity to say be vigilent, and stay safe.
