Ok People take your pick, CS Recon Tanto or KaBar New Generation Utility/ Fighting.
I am asking this cause I have only these two and I can only bring one for my journey. Help!!!

I'd go for the CS recon tanto (IF it has a kydex/concealex) sheath.
I just like the feeling of it, but then i have no real x-perience with the new generation Ka-bar.

It feels that the CS would be thougher, but i have NO facts to back it up. (i've used a CS original tanto HARD and trust in'em)

Guess my 2 cents wasn't...

If those are my only choices, I'd go for the Ka-bar

I haven't seen the new gen KaBar, but from my experience with my 1217, I'm not impressed with their quality. I'd go with the CS in a heartbeat.

Where are you going, what other gear are you taking, and what do you expect to encounter that would require the usefulness of a knife?

I have used my Recon Tanto for everything from self-defense to chopping up wood. The knife is awesome, and the grip is comfortable.

I loved my KaBar too though, and as far as bang for the buck, had I not purchased my CS R.T. as a factory 2nd, thereby makeing cost a minor issue, I would go with the older KaBar.

I really do not like the new KaBar as much, for they are too pricey. KaBar is an AWESOME value priced piece, but I would rather FIGHT with my RECON TANTO.

Go with CS's 2nd line. GOod knives at great prices.

Your quest is over. Take your Cold Steel Recon Tanto. This is a very strong knife that sharpens easily.

For utility I would go with the Ka Bar every time. Is your Ka Bar the D2 tool steel model? If so I would take that 110%! Hell of a knife.

The C/S would have better edge holding than the basic Sandvick steel Ka Bar, but would rust far more.

I would take the Ka Bar either way.

I really agree that for utility, the K-bar wins hands down. As for their quality, all I can say is that in 'Nam, in slow hours, by buddies and I practiced throwing our K-bars hundreds, if not thousands of times. As we go good, they stuck most of the time. But each had dozens of misses of one sort or another. Never heard of anyone having any problems with their knife after that. My only problem was that some SOB stole mine. The one I stole to replace it wasn't as good as my original. Still would like to get my hands on that evil-sh*t. :mad

All I can tell you is that I just bought an original. If the new one is any better, can't think of too many knives that would be better -- tho I really want a Fallkniven A1.

Well guys, thanks for the opinion so far. I will be heading to a small town in Skyes and will be residingf there for a couple of months, work purposes. I am not bring much stuffs there, but I do know that a fixed blade is necessary for the stay.
I personally like the CS Recon Tanto, been using that since I got it 4 years ago. I even got a second piece (with Kydex sheath) just in case I lost my working piece. I just got the Kabar New Gen a year ago, haven't put it the field test yet, thought this might be a good oppotunity for it. I will await other opinion before i make my choice. Thanks guys.

The Kabar is better for utility and less apt to scare the sheeple even if it is a larger knife.
And the Kabar was used and praised by troops the world over, still is in most cases.

OK Thanks guys for all the tips, I know what I'll be bringing along...... <IMG SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0">

Tennesee,

A word of caution: I know some SAR people who were using the Ka-Bar brand 7" USMC-style knife as their main blade for work -- and they kept breaking them. Then they switched to Camillus' version of the same knife. And no breakage anymore.

Camillus still makes them exactly to mil-spec and has even improved heat treatment. The current Ka-Bar brand is a reconstituted company, and their current USMC knives are not mil-spec (they have powder coated blades and polished handles) -- so Bugs, your Nam knives were different than the current brand, "KaBar", but were exactly like the current Camillus.

Ka-Bar seems to be coming up with cool knives otherwise, but just wanted to put that out for reference.

Best,

Brian.

Why do the handles on the KaBars have those slots in them? It looks very uncomfortable for the hand.

Johnniet,

The originals are made of stacked leather washers, compressed into place on the tang, and the tang pinned in place.

They are actually quite comfortable to use, IMHO. Others will probably disagree.

Best,

~Brian.

Brian- Thanks for the advice, I realise that the blade of the current Kabar New Gen "feels" not as tough as the Camillus version. In this case, i think the CS Recon Tanto is a better choice for my journey....
Thanks once again buddy. Cheers.

Tennessee,

Just to be sure I was clear, I was talking about the traitional stacked leather washer USMC KaBars. I can't speak to the quality of the New Generation ones, as they SAR people weren't using that one.

Good luck either way! I have a Recon Tanto myself, and it is a very tough blade.

Peace,

Brian.
