im wondering if i should get the cold steel san mai III srk or the ontario blackbird sk-5
the blackbird has 154cm steel
the cold steel has san mai III steel witch is a vg-1 lamination
which do u think?

basic outdoor skills like whittling, battoning, making feather sticks, stricking phero rods, and perhaps some skinning but probably not

154 is one of my favorite outdoor use steels. It holds a nice edge for the jobs you are doing with it and it not too difficult to sharpen. Are you willing to spend a bit more? Then your choices would really open up.

thanks both the knives i mentioned are aroun 120dollar mark but the cold steel vg-1 lamination is close to the fallknive vg-10 lamination i believe.

You are getting close to a basic Emerson for that much! If you look around you can get one of the smaller models for less than 150. 154cm steel, g10 handles. They are my favorite camping and hiking knife. My wife actually just took my blackbird from me for her purse after I let her use it a couple of times:)

Blackbird SK-5 is the best option here!
The best overall knife.
I have one,very,very comfortable.

None of what you want to do requires any special steel or maintenance.

I say choose the one you think looks better.

I just got an SK5 so I can't speak to actual "use" but the ergonomics, weight & balance are awesome! The steel, blade/grind etc. are all good to go and it's a very weight neutral knife that still has plenty to offer in size... I say go with the SK5 all the way. My only complaint with the SRK is the handle, I like the micarta on the SK5 alot more.
