Which knives are available in a trainer version?

I know Benchmade makes a balisong trainer and I think a Griptilian maybe as well, and I am pretty sure that Spyderco makes and Endura Trainer.

Do you guys know of any others?

My MA class does a fair amount of knife training, and it seems to make the most sense to get one of the trainer knives to train with, and then to carry the real version as a self defense blade.

Just wondering what my options are.

Just about any knife can be used as a trainer. Tape a folded piece of cardboard over a cut plastic straw that is slide over the edge, Then run a couple strips of that packing tape that has the nylon stripes in it around and around the blade and cardboard. This is Redneck engineering but it works fine. Don't use this for stabbing type maneuvers with sharp pointed blades.

For absolute security you can always grind the edge flat and round off any angles and points.

For really absolute security I would make a knife out of wood in the same shape and style as the one you want to train with. The Japanese sword fighters used bamboo sticks to practice with.

The Benchmade Griptilians (not the Minis), 710, 520, and balisongs (40T) have trainer versions. As do the Spyderco Endura, Delica, and the discontinued Gunting.

I would NOT reccomend taping up a live blade and using it as a trainer. If a trainer version of the knife you want to carry isn't available (and you don't want any of the knives that have trainer versions), your best bet is to buy two, and actually physically grind off the edge and blunt the tip. Otherwise, it's a serious accident waiting to happen.

You stole my answer :D I often wonder how folks can read all day on this forum that my bm/spyderco/etc cut through 40,000 miles of cardboard before getting dull, but somehow when the same cardboard is taped to the same knife, it is presumed that the knife won't cut through it
