Which knives did GEC put the "Northfield" shield on?

I have not seen it in a while, but I like the full name shield on equal end knives. I think I have seen it on some 61s and some 53s. Has it been on any others?

I'm guessing you're asking about the Northfield Banner shield, like the ones pictured here?

I reckon your question is nearly impossible to answer for sure. The two knives shown here are 'parts' knives, which were made with left overs. The Burnt Orange is 1 of 2 and the Autumn Gold is 1 of 3. Who knows how many other knives made like this are out there. I doubt even GEC could tell you for sure, exactly which patterns have had this shield. Their production totals only list the pattern numbers with handle materials and how many of each, serialized and unserialized.

Maybe we should ask everyone who has knives with this shield to post pictures of them! No telling what might come out of the woodwork. Happy hunting! :D

Nice! I had not seen it on a ben hogan before. Thats the one. I like it a lot, and there are still a couple floating around at retail on the 53 frame, but since I already have a 53 I was hoping to find it on another frame.

I got this #61 Congress.

There's a few 61's with the banner shield at dealers, but they all appear to be burnt stag, if that's something you like.

I did some digging and found one with a long pull in the smooth banana bone from 2009 :D - they only had one!

A BEAUTY of a knife you got Jeff, I tend to like the unxld shields myself, but on a Congress it doesnt look like theres any other way to go but the banner. A congress was going to be my 3rd in line premium purchase, but I may bump up to 1st to buy a banner before theyre gone.

Good to see you got one,
Connor

That Banana Bone handled Congress is sweeeet! I'm a sucker for smooth bone handles anyway. Agree that the Northfield banner shield was perfect on the Congress pattern.

That Banner also looks really good on the 65 frame as shown by draggart. Might not look bad on Barehead 73 or 77 type knives too. Or a big Equal End 54.

I had a Half Congress Stag with one that I gave away, it was well inlet as far as I can recall.

If GEC actually bothered to do something with the 13 frame (Congress Jack, Rat-Tail bolsters and wraparound spring) as used only once on the Forum Knife 2013 they could really make a spectacular knife if they employed this shield and other Gimp/Bowtie styles.

Without going through all of the old photos...it is really difficult to know. I have made every attempt to try and capture shields in my database but there are still a lot of blanks to fill. I really only captured the shields for releases since I made the database.
I always thought that was one of their best shields though.

My surprisingly old son has suggested a ‘survival’ knife as a stocking filler in his Birthday list.
I have no idea about such things, but have shieldon knives that there will be those on here who do - so can anyone make any recommendations?
Thanks
"The best quote/unquote "survival knife" is (are) the one(s) you have with you."

A Buck 184, CS Bushmaster, or Kukri for example, might be a fantastic "survival knife", but it isn't going to help very much at all, at all, in the field if it was left home because it is too heavy/awkward to carry.

I'd suggest a Buck 110/112 with the standard 420HC blade, or a Mora or other Puukko if a fixed blade is wanted, carried on the belt, paired with a Buck 301 or 303 stockman, and a SAK Huntsman/Fieldmaster or Evo Grip 14 or 17/S17 or 18.
(Forget the 14 if you want a wood saw. The others mentioned have the saw. A pocket cable saw can come in handy for larger branches.)
Any of the knives will whittle/carve a wedge for splitting wood if needed.
Oddly enough, in over 60 years of hunting, camping, and hiking, I've never needed to split any kindling or firewood ...

Introduce your son to 'VINNIE'S DAY OFF' on You Tube.
He proves by doing that you can get all the materials needed to build a shelter, a camp fire, make emergency weapons like a bow and arrows and a spear, (in different videos) using a small pen knife to a 111 or 130mm SAK. First video of his I saw he built a shelter using a two blade double ended pen knife, about the size of a peanut.
He also shows finesse and knowledge (which he teaches by doing) beats brute strength, and it is a lot easier on you and your equipment.

You might want to start a new thread in General Knife Discussion, asking for this recommendation.
You posted in an old thread about specific shields on Great Eastern Cutlery knives in the Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades sub-forum.
