Which knives do you use for big game?

Grohmann #4 Survival knife or #1 Russel Belt knife.

I have no idea how well they work on big game as I have not managed to shoot any.

yes, like will, the knife i use for the big game is the one we cut the cheese with for the poker game on mon nites. but if i did go to somewhere to shoot a large and possibly dangerous animal...I would take a small drop point hunter (blade 3" or slightly longer) out of talonite...

I've got a Buck Vanguard Master Series with BG42 alloy blade that is my top pick. The handle and blade design are pretty optimal and the BG42 takes and holds a razor edge through large jobs. Large jobs are 500# plus animals like elk.

I have not taken big game in a number of years, but the knife I will carry the next time I DO go out will be my favorite knife by Ed Fowler. It has a 4 1/2" WoodCrafter style blade. I loaned the knife to an old friend who used it for a season deer hunting. Was wondering if I was ever going to see it again !

Depends on how/what/where I big game hunt but... for cutting pepperoni and cheese at the card table, kitchen and camp use and field dressing skills, if I were limited to one knife I would take my Puma White Hunter II with Kraton handle. The back-side can chop light brancges or make kindling and the blade shape is good for skinning.

I usually carry two knives, a folder and a one-piece, with the former for cutting and the latter for tough stuff and hard use. Overall, a skinner or semi-skinner os preferred and the White HUnter II, or White Hunter (full size) with small serrated section foots the bill very nicely, thank you.

last year it was a Dozier pro guide knife and a randall #5 this year it will be a damascas elk hunter from gary little.
I carry the hunters in my pack and my battle mistress on my belt for bush wacking and to dig arrows out of trees if i should ever miss!

For several years my Dozier Yukon Pro Skinner has served me very well on all sorts of big game. This fall I'll also be using my Simonich Talonite Cetan to help dress, skin and process all of my wild game. Can't wait!

just this month the Dozier personal, she was a medium sized cow, for meat this summer..the D2 steel was sharp throughout the task.It put a good hole in my hunting partners hand too...keep a steady aim....

For moose, deer, bear, CS Master Hunter does pretty well all-round. Roselli erapukko (4" blade)is an excellent skinner. Next season, Marble's Fieldcraft.
For politicians, a rusty file would suffice.

Last time I was hunting I lent the use of my double edged Smith and Wesson. It did a great job on a west Texas size doe (some of the smallest deer I have ever seen, Houston area deer are the size of large dogs) and a Havalina (a vary smelly SoB). It skined and butchered the deer and gutted the pig with out any difficulty. One advantage that I liked was you could switch sides half way throu instead of having to stop and clean it of. The handel worked well with blood on it, and the blade was still vary sharp after we got done (could have skined 2 more most likely). I dont know the leagality of daggers but if you want an alternative to the exspensive White Hunter ($200 some). You do not realy need a realy large knife to get the job done. From what I saw (I only watched) if you know what you are doing you do not need to cut that much bone to justify a large knife.

Just my thoughts,

Vlad

Last year was my first big animal and I used a Schrade sharpfinger. I just bought a Dozier Pro Guide that I can hardly wait to use for the next! I am curious what others think of the red handle so here is a picture.

My best friend used to work at a packing house, so he knows a good knife when he uses one! One day at our homestead in Alaska, there were 3 moose down at the same time. My friend took a brand new Carbon V CS Master Hunter and helped to skin all three moose with it. He said he steeled it up a couple of times and it was still super sharp when he got done. Despite all the CS hype it's hard to deny that is super performance from an inexpensive knife! Try one!
