Which knives don't I know about?

Hi everyone.

I won't ask the question of "which knife should I get? X vs. Y?" because I've read through alot of these pages, and it's been done to death.

However, I don't claim to be anywhere near as knowledgable on the subject of knives, so I'll ask what you guys would suggest, per my parameters, because I simply have no idea about which knives to really ask about.

I had a Benchmade AFCK in D2 steel that I loved, but seemed to have lost it somewhere over the last few weeks. It was my Go-to EDC knife, because it handled everything that I threw at it, and kept ticking. I'm a huge fan of Spyderco Police and Delica models, but I always seem to break them. I started carrying my AFCK in M390 recently, and managed to break the tip on that one too. I'm down to using my old Buck 110 knife (it's actually my dad's, but he left it at my house, and posession is 9/10th of the law), but I really don't want to use it much, since his dad gave it to him 40ish years ago.

I'll admit that I'm pretty hard on knives, and that I don't always use them properly. I pry at nails, cut drywall, use them as chisels, and overall beat the crap out of them daily. To me, they're a tool, and I don't mind beating one up.

I've been looking for something new to fill my needs as a knife that does well at cutting and slicing, but has the ability to use it as the "all-in-one" tool that I keep in my pocket. I only require that it has a pocket clip, be of larger blade (between 3 and 4.25 inches), and cost less than $600. I already have a Victorinox multi tool, and an older SOG multi tool, but I need something that I can clip in my pocket, instead of carrying on a belt.

I've looked into the Striders, and I think it's a good place to start, but when it comes to knives I don't pretend to know all of the makers and models.

If there's another post where the OP has the same requirements/question, please post a link and I won't waste your guys' time.

Thank you.

I really really really like the look of Lion steel knives.
I am also a fan of the crkt m-16 even though some look down upon it.
But you can always make one too... or assemble a kit and customize to your likings.

But I really like those lion steel knives.

ZT0350. Plenty tough enough and well under your budget so you don't have to worry about beating on it.

Resharpen (reshape the tip) the AFCK. A knife that is going to stand up to prying isn't going to cut and slice very well. Carry a small pry bar.

I'm looking at the Lion Steel and so far I'm liking what I see.

I bought a CRKT m-16 a few years back at the BX in Balad when my issued Benchmade auto opener broke in half (I was an AC-130U guy for 8 years, and we know how to break sh*t), and if I remember correctly I lost it. Nice knives though. And I liked the lock. It might make it's way into my truck console incase I need a quick spare.

I'm really liking that benchmade flipper! It looks like they're a pre-order type of item. Any idea where I can place an order or do more research? Also, that D2 seemed to be the only steel that I've come across so far that didn't give me too much grief when I asked it to do more than it was designed for. Do you think the 154CM of the flipper will at least partially live up to the same duties?

As for resharpening the blade of that AFCK, there's a good chance that I will. I was using it as a chisel on some JB Weld that some idiot stuck onto the head of a friends motorcycle (the spark plug threads were all stripped, so someone decided to JB Weld a new plug in).

thanks for the tips in the right direction, and please keep them coming.

Also, I don't pry quite enough to justify carrying a small pry bar around. But trust me, the thought has crossed my mind. I just try to do as many things possible with a pocket knife and a 2 cell Mag-lite

Maybe a Ti framelock with a thick 3V blade ?

With your price range I'd get a custom and make it exactly what I want. If you just want I beater, I've beaten the hell out of my ontario rat 1 and its still going strong. And you could buy 20 of 'em.

Thick bladed knives are definitely a plus. Is there something in production close to that prototype? And I played around with a coworkers Rat 1, and last I checked, I think it was AUS8. I'm not necessarily looking for a beater, but something of high quality that I can use daily. I'm sure that I can buy a 100 pack of some gas station Made in China knives, but I also like to have a little bit of pride of ownership.

So far, it all looks good. I also came across some sebenza threads, and I don't think I could go too wrong with a solid titanium handle. Are those more for slicing only, or will they take a little bit of abuse?

I definitely understand that I'm asking a knife to be something that it really isn't, but I'm sure there are a lot of overbuilt knives out there that suit my needs.

By the way, I watched that Tuff video, and I think that's really closer to what I'm looking for. A quality name, tough steel, and what looks to be a sturdy design. If at all possible, I'd like to hear about a few more knives similar to this one.

Again, I know that what I'm asking is probably some sort of blasphemy in the knife world. Knives are for cutting, hammers are for pounding, pry bars are for prying, etc... but I just don't feel like carrying a tool bag with me wherever I go.

I don't know about any kind of blasphemy. It's your money and your knives. If you want to buy nice knives and tear them up it's your business and no one else s. On the other hand, you might consider not asking people's opinions if you are thin skinned as there are people that will tell you what they think when asked, and sometimes even when not asked.

The pry bar comment was probably talking about the little tad gear $4.95 D9 ( ti/steel alloy) lightweight models that hand from a key chain or other options with something that size range. I have one on my key chain and they are handy.

Good luck. and, yes, you can break any knife made if you try hard enough. Me? I like using the right tools for the job. I pride myself on that, as well as maintaining them, and even making sure they get returned to their place when finished.

It's not as important now in my life but there was a time when it was, and it saved me time and trouble as well as money doing it the right way. One benefit is I', not at all taken back by non stainless blades and don't spend a lot of time trying to figure out which steel corrodes faster.

None of them do when taken care of. Also, no, a Patina isn't necessary though some do find it is easier than maintaining the steel. High polish finishes also help, as do wax, silicone coatings, and other anti rust preventatives.

Welcome to knife collecting. It's a different experience for all of us as we all are looking for something different when we begin.

CRKT Folding Razel.

Get the one with the regular pocket clip. Be aware that you will notice it in your pocket, because the handle slabs are very thick. But it will stand up to your use as well as anything that folds, and it's inexpensive, so not as much of a heartbreak when you do something unfortunate...

Greetings:

For about $145 you could get a Spyderco Gayle Bradley: http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=445. I don't use my knives hard like you do, yet this thing feels absolutely unbreakable to me, way stronger than I guessed given its blade thickness, etc. A few months ago a member of this forum said it cuts like it's angry, and I agree. It's also rightly acclaimed for its materials and its fit and finish, which I think provide pride of ownership. At any rate, just another option among many outstanding choices.

Cheers,
Isaeus

Thank all of you guys for the suggestions.

Shorttime, I like where your head is at. it's hard to break the tip off of a knife when the tip stays at the factory =)

To everyone else, I'm writing all of these down, and hopefully I'll have the time to find a knife shop somewhere here in San Diego and buy locally (I know that I can generally get better deals online, but I like spending locally as much as I can.)

Mastiff, I have never been accused of having thin skin, so I'm more than able to accept any answer that I might get. If I wasn't, then I wouldn't have asked. On a side note, Yogi is the name of my own dog, the 145 pound lump of Rottweiler thats sleeping in my kitchen right now. If he had thumbs, he would help a thief take my TV to their car. There really isn't much else that a man needs besides good friends, good family, and a good dog.

Overall, I really wish that my state would allow me to carry a fixed blade knife, as the Ontario's and fixed Benchmades that I've had in the past have always done me well (so well, that they usually get stolen). The Benchmade Outbounder in D2 is probably my favorite knife of all time, in look, and feel, but "The Man" tells me that it would be unwise to carry it.

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated, but not necessary. I think that the links that ABCDEF have provided me should answer my question, and not waste any more of you guys' time.

Gracias muchachos

Good friends, good family, good dog, and good beer.

Don't worry about wasting our time. We've gone fifty posts without the original poster on many occasions. We can entertain ourselves...

Hogue EX01 is a beast as well! you might look into it. Done right, 154CM is a great steel!

In California it is perfectly legal to openly carry any size fixed-blade of any design under California state law (CA penal code 20200). Some individual counties have their own limitations (in Los Angeles you can't openly carry a fixed-blade if the blade is 3 inches or longer). But San Diego county follows state law. I live in San Diego and openly carry a fixed-blade everyday.
