hey guys,
I'm in a bit of a quandry, near the end of June i am going on a work trip to Jamaica to do charity work in a deaf village. The problem is i can't make up my mine as what to take, i don't want anything that's so good i can't stand to lose it, so i have narrowed it down to the following:
Busse Mean Street

Busse Basic 5 (Wickedly Sharp)

Busse BM

Kershaw/Ken onion Whirlwind
SOG Jetedge
CS ATC Kukri
CS Recon Tanto
CS Voyager XL (in clip point and tanto)
spyderco rescue
please consider the following:
they have to go thru a 2-3 hour ride in the jungle(may rain), Customs may start rifling through my luggage(getting into jamaica was harder than getting out last time) and sheer durability and idiot proof-ness (i plan to lend them out to others as well.

Australian: That's not a knife, this is a knife
Bart: No, that's a spoon
Aussie: I see you've played knifey-spooney before

WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME to the BF!

When "going to the woods" I like to have at least three knives.

The "big one" could be the recon tanto or even a CS SRK. No doubt the Busse #7 is a better choice - but the chances of loosing it in the situation you describe....are just too high. If you are a CS man - I'd go for the bush ranger or even the trailmaster.

The second knife is the ever-on-my-person folder. Here, any good sized Spyderco will do, I would go for the starmate first, Wagner second and Goddard third but even an endura will do.

As for the third blade - this is my last resort back up - has to be on your person even when you jump into a lake - so a Titanium or talonite neck knife is the best option.

Need I say one MUST have a Leatherman super tool (or a similar tool of your liking) on him at all times???

The knives of course need to be tuf clothed

Hope this helps.

Enjoy your trip

Get a Leatherman super tool, a Swiss Army Knife(Victorinox), and a Cold Steel Bushman. Buy a machete when you get there. This will give you useful tool with minimal exposure to Customs and local law enforcement. Also they are good tools but cheap enough to leave as gifts to locals.

I carry a large tanto Voyager alot in my pocket(not clipped on). It's big enough to be a serious knife, and you don't have to display it! AUS8 seems to resist corrosion pretty well, and face it, at $35 (WOW sale) you wouldn't shed any tears if it didn't come home with you. I haven't handled a XL but it would be an inch longer I guess. Too big to carry in the pocket w/o clipped, I think. Go with the folder!

I agree with Fudo. Go with a couple of general purpose multi-tools, and buy a machete in-country. The machete will be more efficient then anything you are likely to bring in. If you want you can use the additional baggage capacity to take a good quality sharpening stone with you.
