hey, i'm new to the world of khurkuris, and really like what i see. im currently looking to purchase my first khukuri. for the most part it will be used for chopping, brush clearing, etc., but i would also like something that would be functional as a survival knife. from what ive seen, the ang khola seems like it might be the best choice, but i really don't know, so any suggestions are greatly appreciated. thanks!

The AK is a chopper, and in the medium sizes, an excellent all-round blade. If MOST of your use would be clearing-chopping, it could be ideal. I've had about two weeks experience with a new WWII, which has been touted as the best combination of tool & weapon ever devised. I have found absolutely no argument with that, and I'm coming to the conclusion that it is first rate as a general-purpose blade. It should be right in there for serious consideration.

most of the chopping would be on downfall across trails since i prefer to use chainsaws etc. as little as possible, and there is a good amount of deadfall that measures around a foot in diameter. since that would make a up a decent portion of my chopping, would you reccommend the 20 inch AK, 18, or 15? thanks again.

Welcome Quad, my 15" AK does a perty good job at chopping and splitting logs about with a 7" diameter and smaller. If I was to chop 12" or bigger logs, I would want a 20" AK or maybe a Ganga Ram Special If waight is a concern. I hear it's a great chopper and lighter then a 20" AK. Just my $.02 worth.

Would suggest the 18 inch over the 21 inch A.K., but that 's my personal preference. The bigger models are fine if used strictly for chopping and if you're in shape. Get one and try it out one weekend to ensure that the handle is comfortable during use. Consider one of Uncle Bill's Deal of the Day specials.

Good luck and welcome to the Cantina,

Quad first let me also welcome you to the Cantina, pull up a chair or somethin' to set on and get comfortable, And you can break out the smokin' or other form of tabbaccy ifen ya wanna.;)!!!!:)

Quad I can't disagree with what everyone else has said as it's all good advice,,,, But I feel the AK makes a better splitter than a chopper and I'm wondering if the Ganga Ram Special or the Baby Ganga Ram Special might serve your needs better, although I wouldn't want to tackle a 12" dia downfall with my BGRS as it's just a little small for logs that big as is any 18" khukuri IMO, in other words, You're gonna be there a while with an 18" model no matter which it is, depending on what kind of shape you're in.:)

Some other things to take into consideration is what kind of deadfall you're talking about. If it's the softer woods like varieties of pine and such the GRS would definitely be my choice.
If the wood is in the hardwood family such as oak, hickory, hackberry and the like I would come more near thinking about the AK.
And especially if the wood has been down for a while.

For brush clearing, limbing, and similar chores the GRS with its thinner blade profile would still be the better khukuri for the job.
Depending on your size and the shape your body is in will go a long way in determineing what khukuri you should buy.

Thanks Yvsa. I'd say that i am in pretty decent physical shape, and am used to spending hours at a time swinging a maddux to make trail or a maul to split wood. most of the forest around is hardwood, with pine and the like somewhat of a rarity. in addition to clearing deadfall, i would be using it to chop down maples, ash, cherry, and oak of 3-6 inch diameter and then stripping off the branches. i would also like to be able to use it for brush clearing, such as on overgrown trails where there is an abundance of prickers, bushes, annoying small things that make passage not so comfortable. thanks for your input.

Quadro151, maybe you should get two Khukuri's from Uncle Bill. Say a 20" AK for the heavy chopping/splitting and something lighter for the brush work.

wildmanh, i would love to get 2 HI's, but sadly there is no way i can currently afford it :(. im thinking maybe the AK in the next few mths and then another next year....

Watch for blems, Quad. They are good knives with some small cosmetic blem that'll save you money.

thanks Bill, i appreciate the heads up. do you post the blems on bladeforums or you website?

Fact of the matter is bout any medium heavy 18 to 20+" will do the job.

The rest is all debating over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin ( incidentally, the answer to that question is "more than you'd think!" ).

I love my BGRS but if I had to pick one it would be my Sher made 18 inch AK! I also love my Sanu 20 inch AK. I swear by the almighty AK's!!!:) The 20in AK is a HUGE blade take into consideration where you'll be taking it. What ever you get you can't go wrong and I'm sure you will LOVE it!!;)

thank you all for your input, i think ill just have to save a lil and maybe treat myself to an early new years present soon...with a beauuuuutiful 20 inch AK....thanks again, you guys really helped me out!:D
