What would you guys recomend for a new guy? I would be using it for kitchen knives and pocket knives. I have a few flate stones and never realy got the hang if it. For my cheep garden knives I use a V shaped sharpener like a Smith's. For the kitchen knives I use a Henckels steel.

For a Lansky type sharpener, I'd recommend the GATCO - preferably with diamond hones.
It's very similar to the Lansky, but the clamp is better and the hones are larger with built-in guides.

The DMT Aligner sharpening kit is a good one too. Even better: using the DMT clamp with the GATCO hones.
(The DMT clamp by itself is very inexpensive; a good place to get it is www.knifecenter.com)
