Of the following three choices, which 'large' tool would be the best thing to have along in a rural/wilderness retreat situation: machete-type large knife, kukri, or tomahawk? Is it all just a case of personal preference or do the advantages of one outweigh the others? Why?

it depends on the area ,jungle , woodland, artic, coastal. Mine would be a Khukuri in one of it's forms/style's.Bomb proof can skin gut chop trees cut grass peel wood like a draw knife pound stake's crack coconuts :D shellfish pry bar self defense and compact does'nt get in the way when worn

Hi M.T.,
"Retreat" being the operative word here I would say that something like the Himalayan Imports BAS Model Khukuri would do all that you would need to do under a variety of circumstances. It is a handy size and if the brass Chape is removed from the scabbard, it fits nicely into a day-backpack.
So if it isn't needed then it's out of the way, but always handy.

I would have to agree. Of the three choices you gave, I think the Khukuri would be the most versatile and I don't even own one yet.:D
