As I understand, only those properly licenced by Spyderco can legitimately use the trademarked round hole on thier blades. Wegner-Bogezewski ( sp?) is allowed to use, so is A. T. Barr, which other custom makers do you know that are given permission to use "the hole"? (Esp if they have'nt made a collaborative model for Spyderco, I am curious)

Benchmade used to have permission. And they did it a mite better - the holes where bevelled!

I came across a mint NIB Benchmade mini AFCK with a round bevelled hole. And - Crikey! it's a lefty! (As you can guess, I'm southpaw) But still, I do like righty Spyderco's for left hand ring finger opening.

Wow, thanks for the fast replies! That Andre DeVilliers is one BIG knife:eek: Nice lines, it looks like it it built like a tank.
I know Benchmade used to use the round hole, however I preferred the non-beveled holes since the BM cut out doesn't "catch" as well for me. A. T. Barr and the DeVilliers above is interesting, both use the hole but they have not done anything I know of with Spyderco, maybe one/both will have collaborations in the future??? A. T. Barr especially because he makes 2-1/2 in. blades, and spyderco is interested in producing for a shorter blades market -

I've seen a custom Kaspar by Crawford with a Spyder-hole. It was very nicely done. Pat Crawford is a reputable custom maker so I'm sure he must have had Spyderco's okay on this item.

Either that, or he in heap big trouble!!

I think Spyderco is pretty good about licensing the "hole" to custom makers. Production would probably be another story! Ryan uses the "hole!" See Spyderco/Ryan thread!

There are a number of custom makers using the round hole. We find the custom makers to be quite honorable about our limitations.

I heard that Joyce was chasing down a list for you.

All I know is that you won't find any round holes from other manufacturers...
I don't like the beveled ones and I don't like the ones on griptillan either.
My Endura is perfect.. going to get a Merlin from glasshartt

A couple of makers that have worked with me:

Others that I'm working right now with new collaborations are Howard Viele, Warren Thomas, Mike Snody and I offered to pay for Jeff Hall's license so I can use the hole in my designs with him:

Hi All,
Sorry it took a while to get this answer, but here is the reply from Peter Jhones at Spyderco.

Dear Forumites,

Greetings,

Follows is a list of collaborators that are currently licensed to use the round hole in their work. Please remember, some of the more recent licensees are now required to renew annually, so the list may change with time. I personally require the maker to vouch for his ability, goals and sales venues, so I know these guys understand the limited, high quality nature of the requirements. I’m licensing a trademark, so I want anyone using it to positively represent the mark. From everything I’ve seen, these guys do it well.

As a side note, I know some discussion about Mr. Andrew DeVillier’s work has taken place. I’m glad to report with Mr. Larry Connelley’s facilitation (owner of Knifeart.com), a simple lack of knowledge of what our program is about was cleared up, and with full cooperation,
Mr. DeVilliers recently signed up. Much appreciation for the efforts. Welcome aboard!

Best Wishes,

Peter H. Jhones
