Hi there!

I'm looking at potential Kershaw candidates for my boyfriend's birthday gift, including JYD I, JYD II, Shallot, and Groove and I was wondering your guys' opinion/advice on which would be best. I'm pretty new to the whole knife scene so I'm a little lost (But I do own a Kershaw 1660CKT- which I like a lot and am getting a Spyderco Delica 4 very soon) .

He likes all black knives, tip up, small clip, and preferably no tanto. I know that he has owned a lot of Spydercos and that he has a Kershaw Cyclone and had a Leek which he really liked too.

Also, do they make an all black Groove because he seemed really interested in it.

Thanks so much!

Jess.

Jess.

Wow...you kinda narrowed it down there...have you looked at the Avalanche or the ZT0200? Other than the Cyclone, that's about all I can come up with.

Both JYD's are great, the Shallot is the newest offering, and the Groove is a beautiful knife...you said he has a Cyclone. Does he really like it? If so, get the size he doesn't have!

If you can afford it, buy him a ZT 0200...That is one top-dawg folder!...
If you can't spend THAT much money, I'm pretty sure that he'd be very pleased with a JYD II...That's alot of knife "for the money".

+1 on the Avalanche. Black G10 scales, black blade, assisted opening, wicked looks, great build and one of my top 10 favorite knives of all. It is tip down however, but for an AO that shouldn't matter at all. Oops, I almost forgot, it has an S30V steel blade as well.

The Black Groove is a great knife, but it is a tanto blade.

The original groove is a great knife at a great price.

I recommend the SHALLOT above all others though. It has good steel, offers tip-up, has a small pocket clip, and it is like a larger version of the Leek, which you mentioned him liking.

As stated above there is an all black Groove with a tanto blade.
My son got me one for Christmas and I love it!! It's the 1st tanto
bladed knife I've owned. When you say preferably no tanto, do you
mean it's totally out of the question? I ask because it really is one sweet
knife. A very smooth flipper. If the Tanto Groove is out... I'd say go with
JYD II just because of all the great compliments it gets here. I do have the
JYD I and it is a great little knife.

+1 more for the Avalanche. Also mine (sep 06) can be changed to tip up. Watch that bay place you can get them for $50 or less. The g10 is very rough and will need to be sanded down a little on the clip side, so that you can smoothly remove it from your pocket. I used 400 grit wet dry on it while I had the clip off to change it to tip up. Didn't sand much just took the "tooth" off of it, works great now.

i loved the feel of the JVDs. and the flipper works great.

BUT, it doesnt have a detent, which I feel is unsafe.

correct me if im wrong.

Jessie.......whats the budget? (surprised you guys didnt ask that lol). i agree with the others though. look into the lahar also. has the best steel of the bunch and is a simply great knife!

i wouldnt say that the shallot is a larger version of the leek. its blade geometry is really different.

The Leek on steroids is a Shallot. Every feature, except size and blade shape, are identical. Oh yeah, there is also no blade lock either on the Shallot.

I still say the Shallot would appeal to almost everyone that likes the Leek, but wants a bigger version.

Jessie, if you can go a little higher ($150) without a doubt get him the Mini Cyclone Ti/ZDP. Black ZDP-189 steel blade, gray titanium FRAME LOCK handlle, AO, tip up option...You can't find a better value anywhere! He'll love it!

I liked my first one so well, I bought another!

i stand by the Lahar. It is an awsome knife, and is in you budget. The shallot is a good idea too. I still say Lahar

Thanks so much for all of your help, guys! I think I found something that he'll really like, but unfortunately, he reads these forums too so I can't tell.

Again, thanks so much for your advice, it helped a lot. :)

Jess.

well keep us posted Jessie. its kinda obvious we will want to know what he got the second before he opens the box :D.

oooo i know! have him open it while on the kershaw forum so he can then proceed to tell us LOL

Yeah. we want to know...I think I saw one of his posts earlier...he mentioned his girlfriend, whose BF name is Jessie9, who carries a Leek...must be you?
