ALSO POSTED TO SPYDERCO WEBSITE FORUM - sorry for duplication.

I have pretty much decided to buy a Moran fixed blade, and possibly a Wegner or Chinook as well.

Anyway, regarding the Moran which do you all recommend as the best blade style for general field dressing, skinning of big game? The two choices are: FB01 (upswept blade) or the FB02 (drop point) style. I would think that the drop point might be the best choice for the same reasons I’ve heard the Wegner is better than the Chinook regarding the “unzipping” of an animals underside. Your thoughts?

If you buy a spydie wegner, buy the upswept Moran since it does skin better than the drop point. OTOH if you buy the chinook, go with the drop point Moran since it will gut better than the chinnie and the chinnie can be used for skinning. I have both Morans and use the upswept point for camping, canow tripping and general tromping through the bush. I picked up a drop point late last winter and will use it when hunting this fall. We will see how it compares to a drop point custom I have used in the past (forged 52100 steel). I love the vg10 steel on the camping Moran that I have used for several years.

bansidthe,

Great advice. Thanks for this counsel, and the benefit of your experience with these knives.

I agree with the combinations suggested here, in terms of application. The thing is, I think now that I must get a Wegner as a first step. This is because everybody is telling me how great they are and because this knife feels better to me in terms of the way it fits my hand.

The other thing is that I prefer the looks of the FB02 drop point Moran. I realize that these are both the same kind of blade style, so I really don't "need" both...but really, what does need have to do with this? Right?

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

Certainly practicality is often put aside when we are dealing with knives and other obsessions. I also prefer the looks of a drop point blade. I have a wegner as well as chinook and the wegner is better as a hunter but when hunting, a folder is only a back up for me. I find that cleanign the goo and gore out of a folder is a real pain. Fixed blades are certainly my favs for field dressing. Good luck hunting this fall....lots of big whitetails in Alberta. Our deer herd is also looking good.:)

Of course you understand this only too well; the "need/want" process of selection regarding knives. For me, I generally justify a need, then end up buying the one I want. Sometimes they're even the same knife!

I'm sure the folder I choose here will be used in a backup role for hunting purposes for me as well. I remember the last time I had to clean up a folder used to dress big game and it can be a bit of a job alright.

I may end up with both Moran's anyway, they just seem like such a good deal!

Thanks again, Jeff/1911.

Jeff/1911- Scout around, you can find some good deals, then you can get both, at the risk of losing a good deal or two, if you email me offlist, I will forward my findings.
