Which multi-tool should I get?

I have been collecting/buying knives avidly for the last 6 years but, aside from a few SAKs, have not bought a good multi-tool yet. I want one. I am currently looking at the SOG Powerlock EOD or one of the Leathermans (Charge XTi, Surge, Core, Wave). I am leaning toward the Charge XTi or the Powerlock EOD. I like the fact that the Charge XTi has a pocket clip and the tools can be accessed with the tool closed, but I like the geared pliers on the Powerlock and the fact that you can somewhat change out the tools and take it apart to clean it. Who has better CS if it should be needed and which would be the best as an overall, not-buy-another-for-a-while multitool for everyday tasks?

Thanks,
Scott

I looked into the Charge xti but ended up with the Wave, couldn't pass it up for 48.95. It was mismarked and they honored that price so I lucked out. I don't care for the Sog and it's funky tool covers. Maybe if I was into Explosive Ordnance Disposal I would probably consider it.. I'd go with the LM Charge.
I really like being able to use my knife blades without having to open the tool..
The diamond file works great on busted finger nails for those times when work gets rough..I bought a 1/4 inch bit socket extension, ground the sides down to fit the Wave's socket and I'm now able to use standard bits. I carry a few choice bits and the extension in the side pockets after I sewed the bottoms shut.

I've actually never had a multi-tool repaired by the manufacturer.

I did break a Gerber Applegate Fairbairn combat knife and received a boxed replacement from Gerber. I have no doubts about their warranty service--top notch.

Although I've never had a warranty issue with a SOG multi-tool, I have had some experience with their customer service since I've ordered optional parts direct from them. I received excellent service.

From what I've heard, the Leatherman customer service is top notch as well.

The XTi is actually my favorite of the Charge models. If you'll mainly use the blades and want one-hand access to them ...or if you want the variety of bits afforded by the bit drivers, the Leatherman Charge is a good choice. The diamond file is another plus. But if you collect knives, the multi-tool blade might not be so important to you... since you may plan on carrying a folder as well.

If the pliers are the most important to you, I'd recommend the PowerLock, especially the new version. The compound leverage pliers and exceptional wire cutter are tough to beat. Also, I think the ability to customize the tool selection or replace worn tools is a big plus in favor of the SOG. An optional hex bit adapter will allow you to use standard hex bits with the 1/4" driver but the adapter does fit somewhat loosely.

The XTi and the PowerLock are two of my favorites ( but I have lots of favorites! ;) ).

Well, FWIW I thought you guys might like to know I ended up getting the Leatherman Surge, and I do like it. The standard pouch/sheath sucks and I'm getting a nylon replacement for it, but overall, I am happy. Now if I could just get a multi-tool like this one with spring-loaded pliers....

Congrats on getting the Surge. I've been EDC'ng mine for almost a year now. Hands down the best MT for me personally. I also upgraded to the LM 'Molle' style nylon sheath and wear it horizontal on my belt so it never gets in the way when I need to work.

I am also about to buy a multi-tool. I am very low on cash for knives, so I have been looking at getting a Wave for around $50. How much do SOG PowerPliers (or whatever the current geared version is named) cost?

If you have a local Lowes store, you can pick up the PowerLock for around $10 less than the Leatherman Wave. I think Lowes sells the Wave for $70 and the PowerLock for $60.

Both are available for less online. You might check the buy/sell/trade forum here and also check Ebay.

I see a lot of low priced multi's on ebay a lot, have you tried there? Just be sure to check the seller's feedback so that you get exactly what you pay for. I got my Surge on ebay for $55, i think it was a bargain. :D

K, thanks for the advice, I'll definately look into a SOG then. I thought they were alot more expensive than that.

Some new features are being added to the PowerLock: improved pliers, gear covers, and a different locking mechanism. If you can find one, I'd recommend getting one with the new Pliers and gear covers ...or at least the new pliers. You can easily tell them apart since the new pliers have a larger wire cutter and have "SOG" three times around the pivot of the pliers.
