I've found the Leatherman Charge/Wave are awesome multi-tools. Getting the extra interchangeable screw driver bits was among the best decisions I've made--they've really saved the day several times.

thanks i am pretty sure ill end up with a leatherman/ i am looking at two waves on amazon now 830040 and 830039.

I put multi-tools in two different categories:

1. Plier Based

2. Swiss Army Knives

Most of mine are SAK's because the need for pliers doesn't come up on a daily basis for my needs. My plier based multi-tools spend most of their time in the glove boxes of my vehicles in case I have to pull a fuse/hose or tighten a nut sort of instance. With that in mind, I prefer the compound leverage action on SOG multi-tools. I have a Wave and it's a great all around tool, but when I think of plier based tools, I want the best pliers. In my opinion the SOG power lock fits that requirement.

I've always been a fan of Leatherman because mine has held up for over a decade, but in the past 2 years I have fallen in love with the Victorinox Spirit X.
Confortable to use, very sturdy, and good price for quality.

Victorinox Spirit,if you want unmatched quality!LOVE mine,so happy i picked one up over the Leatherman.

For that price range you can't go wrong with either Leatherman Wave/Charge line or Victorinox Spirit family. They have slightly different set of tools, so based on your need only you can decide which one is more useful. I personally think Leatherman Charge/Wave is better suited for urban setting, while Victorinox Spirit is for camping or outdoor activities.

Since you won't be packing it on your belt as an EDC, I'd suggest the Leatherman Surge...(It's a large verson of the Wave.).

I carry my Victorinox Swisschamp every day in my backpack. It's been useful many times, and never failed me.

Leatherman tools are great, especially the Wave/Charge models, but the steel used can be brittle and will snap if you use it beyond its tolerances, the same goes for their plier heads, since their now cast in good old Mexico and not made in USA as they were once were.

Personally, I would check out the Victorinox Swistool X for a large MT, or as was mentioned earlier, the Spirit. The fit and finish are much better than anything from Leatherman currently, you can access all tools while the tool is closed unlike the LM MTs. Plus the steel in the blades are better suited since it's the same as used in Vic SAKs and will flex before it would snap. They're also better when it comes to edge retention..

Since you don't seem like an ironworker or someone in the trades that would need a large sized MT, the Spirit may be exactly right up your alley. Good luck..

Cheers,
Serge

AFAIR, when the original USA company that cast the plier heads moved to Mexico years ago, Leatherman elected to continue with that supplier. In all likelihood, the quality hasn't changed. Problems with fractured jaws are usually because cast steel is more brittle and less tough than forged, the usual metal in pliers.

AFAIK, all multi-tool pliers currently on the market are cast, not forged.
