Which multitool?

I'm going to San Antonio, Tx. and thought about bringing a knife. Well, their laws say you can't have a knife with a locking blade(I think). So I decided to get a multitool (I just can't leave the house without a knife:rolleyes: ). I have been looking at the Leatherman Wave but it has a locking blade:mad: . So my next options are:

1) Leatherman Juice
2) Gerber Pro-Scout
3) Sog Powerlock
4) Spyderwrench (doesn't this have a locking blade?)

The tools need to be accesible when the tool is closed (i.e. the Wave). The knife can be opened with one hand (not too important). I think I've seen a Gerber with a thumbstud on the knife. Can find it at local stores such as Wal-mart. And lastly, less than $60 USD. Please feel free to add any to the list. Thank you for your time.

You must have read something wrong.

If San Antonio has knife laws that restrictive, that would make the city more Draconian than London.

You might want a second opinion.

The SOG PowerLock "locks", so that one might be out. The SOG PowerPlier is pretty good, 'tho.

For something a little smaller (& lighter), the SOG Deluxe Pocket PowerPlier is a GREAT multi-tool...(That's the one I carry.).

San Antonio does indeed have more restrictive knife laws than the rest of Texas. I think there was a ban on locking knives to "combat gang violence". Hey, I think that puts it in the same league as London.

To think that San Antonio is where the Alamo is...

How about a Swiss Army Knife? In general better knife blades than a multitool and depending on number of blades a lot lighter. Maybe a Victorinox Tinker or Supertinker.

I live in San Antonio, the state law says no knives with blades longer than 5.5in the city law says no knives either fixed or locking blades shorter than 5.5in. So that can be interpreted any way the LEO wants. Law enforcement here is a real pot luck, some LEO's are bullies and quite corrupt, and others are scared to do or say anything about it. Because of conflicting laws, LEO's have a free hand to interpret them any way they want, so basicly it depends on what kind of mood the LEO is in, or if he likes you or not, as to whether you go to jail for having any kind of knife. Knife laws are not the only such conflicting laws here, where LEO's have the power to selectively enforce the law however they see fit. Sad but true!

Oopse, almost forgot to mention, check-out Nagles when you come, it's a gun shop with a knife department, they're a bit pricey, but they have the best selection of knives in town, Case-XX, Camulus, Puma, Victorinox, Spyderco, Cold-Steel, Browning, Knives of Alaska, Gerber, Schrade, Buck, Benchmade, Emmerson, Microtech, William McHenrey, Chris Reeve, just to name a few of the lines they carry, and they always have the limited edition and commemoratives. They even have a few customs by makers like Randal and D.Holder. They're great to get an ideal of what knives you read about on these forums actually look and feel like. I've asked the multi-tool question before, went down and Nagles had em all, from the SOG Powerlock to the Leatherman Wave, Gerber Legend, and the Vinctrinox Swiss-Tool. Got to check-em all out side by side. I'm leaning toward the Wave for my first multi-tool.

The Gerber Pro-Scout and the Gerber Legend have locking blades too.

So, Your list is even shorter than you think. The Leatherman Juice might be the one.

Good luck,
Allen.

In most area, the local (City) law takes precedence over the State law insofar as the local LEO is concerned.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I may just lean toward Nagles and buy a knife there. Sure hate to leave the house without one but I'll give it a shot. Is that the knife store near the airport? Thanks again for all your help.
