hi

i just ordered a Spyderco Delica II all-steel as a gift for my brother because he likes gentlemans's folders, but only fully made in steel, so no G10, Kraton, MOP ;-), or whatever.........steel only, and blades no longer than about 3.1". one-handed opening mandatory.

but......i'm a little puzzled if i made the right choice. below is a list of potential knives my brother would like. care to tell me which YOU would choose, and why, and what are your general opinions on all of these blades? if my brother doesn't like the Spydy, which i doubt, i could always keep it myself and buy him another knife of these listed below.........

some options:

-sog gentleman
-benchmade 335 big spender
-spyderco delica/dragonfly/spydercard
-al mar secret service
-crkt kiss
-gigand fred carter spectrum
-timberline tim herman wallstreet tactical

or maybe you have other options i don't know of? thanks in advance for any help?

grtz

The Spyderco Native in SS would be a nice choice. 3" blade, one hand opener, great blade shape. It is another choice you could look at.

I would go for the stainless Dragonfly for a clipped knife and I would take the SOG Gentleman for a more pocket friendly knife. A great pick that you did not mention is the stainless Spyderco Kiwi. The Kiwi really fits well in the hand and the Wharncliffe blade is a great style for daily utility.

haven't actually checked any online-stores yet, but i can imagine the model is widely available. i just browsed through "Sporting Knives" 2003 and 2004 and the knives are still featured, so i assume the project is alive and kicking.........

I've seen them on GATCO's website, but I sure haven't seen any place to buy one. I have a feeling Tim Herman would like to see where these are being sold.

That Timberline Tim Herman is one great looking knife! Great design, great flow, looks useful also. AUS-8 is ok. Dunno about build quality or price. Ivory or Burgundy micarta (burgundy looks brown in this pic). Worth a look.

Spydies are hard to beat.

I'd skip that CRKT KISS. Lock is weird, part of the handle, looks like an accident waiting to happen... looks unfinished.

This is were I saw the Wall Street Tactical selling for $80.00. I thought I saw it somewhere else, but was unable to find the website.

It's the one with metal handle.

You can't go wrong with the Delica II SS. There are many other posibilities, but your choice is an excellant one.

the AMK Secret Service is discontinued a long time ago. in some shops you might still find it (Germany is a great country by the way if you're looking for vintage AMK's......they're still loaded with new old-stock knives over there, although still as expensive as ever).

One of the Micarta handled Spyderco Calypso Jr.s would have been a great choice as well.

I like the Kiwi better than the SS Delica, but that's just subjective.

Those all stainless handles are a little too slippery for me. I know a gent's knife isn't something that is going to be covered in blood like a skinner, or subjected to stress like a tactical, but I don't like the way they feel.

The BM 335 is nice but you should also consider the 77X series they are very nice and still big enough for some medium duty work.

Here's another vote for the all stainless Kiwi from Spyderco! Great knife with great steel. Can't go wrong with an S.S. Delica though, and if it's a gents knife steel isn't even an issue, so good choice! :)
