long back country trips in your area which one of these do you chose and why?

I voted for the Busse Battle Mistress (with my dollars too). Why? It's a basic, no-frills design, executed with the finest materials, and embodies pretty much every quality I could wish for in a large blade. Its blade geometry works superbly for chopping and slicing, yet the choil is placed so that fine work is not impossible. It has enough tip for piercing, but it is by no means fine enough to be fragile. The steel works very well for me as well. It has a moderate level of corrosion resistance (important for the edge if it will be stored for a long time, I feel), and the blade coating ensures the rest of the blade will not rust. I additionally find that INFI takes a stellar edge, and is pretty easy to resharpen. I think you can find knives that work better as prybars (not many), that chop better (like some kukris), and that slice better (like maybe a razor blade), but few that can do all these things as well as the Battle Mistress.

that's a very hard list to choose from. All are excellent knives and I have owned all of them at sometime or another. I'm sure anyone lost in the woods would trade a night with his sister for any of them. But if I had to decide I would go with the Brute. It is "Tank" tough and I prefer it's sheath to the others. I like the heavy tip for chopping and the recurve edge works great for normal cutting and slicing.Add to that a steel that holds a great edge but can be easily sharpened on a smooth stone. My second choice would be the Golok as it is a time tested design that many people use as a one knife only choice and you gotta trust experiance:)

Hmmm. A difficult choice. I haven't had the chance to own any of these fine knives yet, but all have received excellent reviews. Since I have plans to order a Martindale in the next few weeks, I guess I'll choose the golok of the four.

Currently, when I'm in woods, I usually carry a 15-18" khukuri, made by either a Ghurka House or a Himalayan Imports. These knives are up to the tasks of light to moderate chopping and light splitting (or heavy splitting, depending on the model). Most of the chopping or splitting I do is recreational (I carry a stove, so the fire is just for fun). I usually back this up with a folding saw and some type of light, sharp knife for more general work, like and SAK, leatherman, or mora. I wouldn't feel too naked with just the khukuri if I lost everything else.

If you have lots of underbrush to cut through, it's hard to beat a machete. In a pinch, a golok or khukuri will also serve for brush cutting.

I have a Tops (but not the Anaconda), have had a Busse BM, and have the Brute.
For me, it would be the Brute, hands down!! This thing is just about indestructable and holds an edge for a very long time. The Brute fits my hand much better then the BM ever did. And for the price of a BM you can get the Brute AND the Patrol Machete and still have change left over.

The Brute,
I agree with muzzleup..for the price you can't beat'em, yet you can beat'em and they keep on going. I can buy at least 2 for the price of a Busse, though the others are excellent tools.

i also like an axe and saw for backcountry use, and handling the breaking down of big game animals, as i do a fair amount of hunting.

i have an rtak and a brute and i would not hesitate to take either of these knives on an extended trip. both are capable of handling serious work (abuse) and i would consider them bulletproof for any task put to them.

although i just got a gransfors hunters axe and am wanting to give it a try.

Golok...
Grohman on belt,
Multitool or SAk
What?? go to the woods withonly one blade..what waste of time...

when you look at the price tag, the brute has got alot of points.

one question to those who own goloks, does the blade have enough heft to build a decent size lean-to.

it is funny when I posted the best shelter poll the winner was the lean-to

then I posted a knife size poll and the winner was 5"-6" knives ine the wilderness

It seems to me to build a lean-to you need a bit of heft. sure when in need you will compensate with arm strength using a smaller knife but it seems like a ideally you would want a decent size knife especially since the number one easiest shelter to biuld is a lean-to.

If I had unlimited time I would love to build a lean-to with a SAK, a golok, a kukri, a hachett, and a 5-6" blade. that would be a valuable experience.

sorry outdoors, I wanted to post a kukri in the poll but you can't edit these dawn things>

The golok!
It's been proven thousands of times in all parts of the world.
And the price is right.

The carbon blade is fairly easy to sharpen in the field too.

Good luck,
Allen.

While dollar for dollar the Brute is a great knife, my vote went with my bucks and that was for the TOPS Anaconda. It is still going strong after two years of use. Good product made by people who believe in their philosophy "One Life; One Knife".

To be honest, I'd want the Busse, simply because it has the highest resale value. I'd then sell it and buy a much more useful package.
1. Either a Dozier Pro-guide or Fallkniven S1
2. SAK Rucksack
3. Folding saw, Gerber or other

This option (I know, it wasn't an option) is WAY more versatile, and would work far better than any one knife trying to be "jack of all something, something". All this for about the same weight. If weight was not a consideration, I'd probably have enough left over for a GB Forrest Axe, to boot! Boy, I'm cheeky.:D

Guys,
Thanks for the kind words fellas! We are pleased to have the BK&T BRUTE compared to the fine blades mentioned above. I must admit to being predijuced, but I will say that while the BRUTE is my favorite of the above mentioned knives, MY personal choice, for the part of the world I live and play in, is slightly different.

I would pic[have picked] the BK&T PATROL MACHETE. It works alot better on lighter vegetation, and really gives nothing up in chopping larger stuff. The only thing the BRUTE does better is prying and bashing, but the PATROL MACHETE cuts SOOOOOO much better. Here is a pic of Ethan Becker and his creation......I think he likes it;)

Will;
I also would have picked the Patrol Machete but it was not on the list. I fully agree with you in that the PM is second to none in the chopping area and can't think of many things to "pry" in the outdoors except for maybe prying loose some dry wood from a large log. Personally I would probable go forth with sagging legs carrying the Brute, Campanion, Patrol Machete, AND the Magnum Camp....I tend to go in for "overkill" but know! that I could force myself to find uses for them all.

Now, all I am waiting for is 1 or 2 of the BK-7s. I am sereously thinking of getting rid of ALL my Ka-Bars and going with the BK-7. In fact I think the Bk7 might even replace the Campanion unless I have to open up a tracked vehicle someplace. :D

Ethan, if you will stop coming up with such great knife designs them maybe I can make a house payment or two...GREAT KNIVES, GREAT STEEL, GREAT PARTNERSHIP WITH CAMILLUS!!!!.

NONE of these!

A Strider knife is the only knife I would carry into any situation!
I suggest the Strider Model BT

It is far superior to any of those knives. Actually my Strdier BT could cut all of them in half most likely

Do yourselves a favor and buy a STRIDER

Most of the knives for voting are made of 1095
so good luck keeping the rust monsters form eating it!
Buy a Strider and survive!

The Busse resists rust surprisingly well, in addition to its other virtues.
Strider makes a first rate knife. Busses are superior in most every measurable respect. That doesn't mean the Busse's are "better" for your particular needs or preferences. Choosing and using a knife can be quite a personal thing. Having said that, asmaller Busse like the SH II would be [and usually is] my choice.
But the Lightfoot Nightstrike in 3V is absolutely incredible, and gorgeous too :)

Make mine the Golok. Its easy on the wallet, easy to carry,
easy to sharpen, with the distal taper it takes less effort to do the
same amount of work than with a standard machete. Well, thats what I think anyway
