I hope that this doesn't turn into a debate like we always get into on motorcycle forums, but...

What oil is best for lubricating the hinges and for rust protection?

I like white lightning a waxbased lubricant which drys when applied and forms a dry
low friction wax film. This is especially good on automatics. Otherwise my particular favorite is WD 40 its low viscosity does not gum. However I am just the first one in on this I am sure you will get a varied response. LT

You ought to get a bunch of choices on this....I'll start with 2 that I use:

1. Mineral Oil. Especially if I'm going to use it around food. Good, inexpensive lubricant for joints, but not a heavy duty rust inhibitor...but it does provide some protection for carbon rich blades.
2. Tuf-Glide for the pivot and wipe with a Tuf-Cloth for the rest of the knife or fixed blade. If you heat the pivot area on a folder with a hair dryer right before you apply the oil, it seems to work best. High quality stuff and works well.

There are many other choices, of course......sooooo....

Doggone it LT.....you're moving like a cat (Yours?) on a hot tin roof!

I also use Mineral oil, inexpensive, good and easy to find, I also use it in bone and stag handles and when sharpening with Arkansas stones. Baby oil in a pinch.

I use a light machine oil for storage. The one I like best, though I don't know that it is any better than others, is Rem Oil that I use on my guns. For working knives that will be around food, or critters being made into food, I use olive oil. It seems to penetrate well, particularly if the metal, as was mentioned, is lightly heated beforehand. Next?
