Looking for the best Pen knife to use as a all round camp knife.

Is the 12" too small as a chopper and the 15" too big as a camp/cook knife? Is Longer even better?

What's your favorite and why?

Maybe the Ang Khola bowie might be a better option for a camp knife. Personally I would use a big chopper and a separate small knife for smaller tasks (that is, if the karda doesn’t suffice)... You could lash the two sheathes together if they’re both fixed blades.
It seems the longer the khukuri you buy from HI the longer the chapmak and the karda is that comes with it.

yes you will probably end up getting both as cybrok said lol :D
i would go with a 15"er... and its all personal preference between an ak and pen knife at that size imo.
i suggest you buy both and check each of them out... :)
if you cant get both, my personal preference would be the 15" pen knife

regarding lashing 2 sheaths...???!?! how is that possible lol
that would be a very super FAT heavy rig that would be equivalent of tying a brick to your belt... i wouldnt recommend that at all lol

I would get the 15" Pen Knife. I once owned one and my hands barely fit on it, it couldn't imagine how I would be able to use a 12" one comfortably. You may want to get something for the smaller stuff that the 15" PK would feel cumbersome for, one of the R series knives would do nicely for this.

the 12 inch is very good for a lot of things, like, everyday, around the house, garden, and is/would-be a joy to carry for all things. Until you needed to do anything longer than say 30-45 minutes, then you might wish you had a bit more oomph in your tool - that's the point i'd go get something bettah... the 15 inch *esp* for camping/outdoors would be ideal instead. still a joy, but you wouldn't be thinking "mmm, wish i had something bigger" until you're doing a bit more than a couple hours of making kindling, stakes, trimming branches and things. i wouldn't consider taking trees down with it, much - okay, maybe one, and it'll do it, just don't expect say, 18 inches of goodness out of it...

comparison wise, the pens are very nearly like GRSes, with a bit more belly and potential on the chopping, different look, and a subtle different feel. they are QUITE good feeling if you're into bolos, machaxs, or even bowies. just right.

for true goodness, ditch the scabbard and karda/chakma, and get a thin sheath rig (leather/kydex). then you'll LOVE it. talk to Dan Koster (the man), who by the way had a *SLIGHT* hand in the Pen design ;> Pendentively speaking :)

yeah totally agree with bladite...
i realised it this morning before leaving for work (had a little time to play with khuks :) )
a 15" baby ganga rams is another good alternative

I really like my my 12" Pen. Yes it is a teensy bit "small" .
If I had about 1/2"-1" more handle it would be Absolutely Perfect. I chop kindling at home or at the campground with it regularly. Worked up a bit of a sweat on 3" or so diameter pine branches, but no big deal. It carries real easy and holds a great edge. I wish that maybe I had gotten a villager finish. I feel a little guilt watching that mirror "magic stone" finish inevitably wearing away:o . The blade shape is perfect for its tasks (thanks Mr. Koster) .
It was my first knife done by Bura (gratitude & respect).
I has a very friendly vibe, it definetly has been blessed. Wouldn't trade it for nothin':) .

You're asking on this forum? :D Obviously, you need 3 or 4 12" models in different handle materials, with at least one in a DK kydex sheath, and an equal number of 15" models! I'm not going to even talk about the 18's...;)

I wish I had the 15in version. I have the 12 but the handle is just too small for my hands. But I have used it for simple tasks none the less and have enjoyed it.
