Which one? BM 940 Blue, BM 690 Elishewitz

I haven't really heard much about the 690, and was wondering what y'all think. I really like the blue color and axis lock, but the wood and carbon fiber look cool too. Any opinions/reviews/dislikes, etc. appreciated.

Thanks,
DD

Daniel, I own both. The 940 is very slim and extremely smooth to open and close due to teh Axis lock. I also like the position of the pocket clip which allows for tip up carry. The 690 is a very very good looking knife and is much thicker than the 940. The action is a little tight, but after a period of breaking in, the action becomes smoother.
I've been spoiled by Benchmade's Axis folders, so I prefer the 940, the 710 and the Ares, but the 690's lockup is very good.

I've never owned the 690 but I have owned a 940. I really didn't like the 940, I sold mine after having it about 3 weeks. So I would say go with the 690. There was nothing wrong with my 940, it was proably one of the best qc knives I gotten from BM, I just didn't like it.

Go with the 690.

I didn't care for the 940 because it was too thin.

The 690 was a little stiff, when opening, when I first got it. I took it apart and cleaned everything. Relubed the pivot and washers with Sentry Solutions "Hi-Slip Grease. . ." Now it's super smooth !

I own both a blue 940 and a 690. They're both nifty knives, but the 940 is far and away my favorite of the two.

The 690 has a classic dressy look. It is kind of thick for use as a gentleman's folder, but if you're willing to accept that you get a lot of knife in the bargain. The grip is good, the action is smooth, and the blade should be up for most tasks.

The 940 has a sleeker, more modern look to it. The blue anodizing is pretty and makes it look downright cheerful--very sheeple friendly. I like the slim profile and do not have any problem getting a good grip on it. The action on mine is exceptionally smooth, even for an axis. The reverse-tanto blade is not my favorite geometry, but it has proven quite functional. Also, that blade is thicker than you would expect from the 940's overall profile. It has taken some surprising abuse without damage.

I'm not sure if it matters to you, but another advantage of the 940 is that it is totally ambidextrous. Every once in a while I want to carry on the left.

Okay, so far its 3 for the 940 and 2 for the 690, and one says "get both" I still would like some more opinions.

Thanks,

I've owned the 940, and have handled the 690. The 940 is far and away my faviourite of the pair.

I think the 690 could be a great knife, if it lost the carbon fibre bolsters. They don't seem to fit properly with the rosewood (note that this is all my opinion). Also, the pocket clip on the 690 is HUGE.

Once you throw in the fact that they're about the same price, but the 940 has the axis lock, the choice, to me, becomes clear.

Buy the 940. If you hate it, you could probably do a straight trade for someone who has a 690 (Or Visa/Versa).

The 940 is simply a great knife. Svelte looking, but tough. I actually use mine for my "around the yard" beater. Useful blade shape (with a strong tip useful for digging 5/8" staples from plywood

), good ergos, sheeple friendly and with the best toy found on any knife - the Axis lock. You can certainly buy more knife, but you really don't need to.

Go for the 940. I own a 942S and it rides in my pocket every day. Handled a 690 at a local store, and felt that it didn't look as nice as the pictures I had seen. Even on the basis of locking mechanism alone, I don't think you can go wrong with the 940, not to mention the fact that it is an awesome little cutter.
