Which one do I get? With Spyderco credit?

I recently sent a Native 4 in for warranty work. I just got a letter back from Spyderco, stating that I have a credit towards any knife from their catalog, as they are unalbe to repair the knife.

I've been looking at the Nilakka or the Southard. I got the chance to handle the Nilakka at a local shop. I would have to pay 50 bucks extra for the Nilakka, or 140 bucks extra for the Southard. Both are made in Taiwan. I have no problem with the Taiwan manufacturer, I had some really nice pieces from them. If the Southard was made in the USA or Japan though, I would gladly pay the extra amount. However, paying the full MSRP for a knife, less the credit, I would like to go the cheapest route.

I'm leaning towards the Nilakka, but tell me why I should go for the Southard? 140 bucks as opposed to 50 bucks is the only thing holding me back. I have gotten rid of most of my one handed folders, in favor of carrying slipjoints, but I've taken the cash and gotten Chris Reeves and Striders, among slipjoints.

How are you going to use the knife? The blade on the Nilakka is pretty light duty.
My preference would be the more usable Southard.
And having a bunch of Taichung knives myself I can attest to their high quality, some of the best Spyderco offers.

Some Nilakka blade info I copied from another thread here.

The Nilakka isn't a true zero grind anymore. They started adding a 30° secondary bevel about 0.010" thick after problems surfaced on the initial release. I personally would go with the Nilakka over the Southard even if it was more expensive.

No opinion beyond the fact that I personally want a Southard.

But I recently had the same thing occur, in which they told me I could be issued credit and was disappointed to find out my VG-10 Spyderfly is only worth $110.

The Southard for me, continues to impress. One of my favorites that often is found in my pocket :)

I've never owned the Nilakka, but I loved the Southard I had! With the much thicker blade, the Southard would be able to handle a bit harder use than the Nilakka. +1 for the Southard here.

Good to know, thanks. Now I'm off to find a deal on a new Nilakka. :)

If any finds a dealer that is selling the southard at average prices please let me know, been looking but I'm not paying over the top $$$

Why do people have problems with Taiwan, but no problems with Japan even though BOTH are "overseas" makers. It really boggles me

I find the Taiwan made Spydies some of the best the company offers. Not only do I not hesitate to add them to my collection, I am looking to put all Taichung models in my Spyderpac.

The Taichung made knives have the best fit and finish of all Spydercos made anywhere, they feel more "custom" than production.
