In on 1st...

If you dont like to read, and dont want to pay anyone...how exactly does the knife get sharp?

Edit to add useful info - Google it.
Obviously you dont want to pay here either...so the “free” option is Google. Might be good info, may be wrong info. Thats the chance with google.

YouTube!!! Plenty of good instructional sharpening videos available. There’s a video where Murray Carter teaches you how to sharpen on a rock if the situation calls for it. In the previous reply mentioning the instructional Sharpmaker DVD, Sal Glesser talks about sharpening a blade on the bottom of a porcelain coffee cup. Plenty of ways to do it, find the right angle, apply minimal pressure, move blade as if shaving a thin layer off of sharpening object until burr is raised, then repeat on other side.

Go to youtube, search "knife sharpening".

Essentially, two choices
1) freehand with sharpening stones/plates.
2) sharpening system. Spyderco sharpmaker, KME, edge pro, etc. I would personally avoid the $5 drag your knife through a wedge thingy.

Which you choose is a personal preference. I use sharping stones myself.

Hi Foggy. My free hand technique is to lay the edge of the blade flat on my thumb nail.
I start sliding it back and forth at the same time I raise the back up until the edge starts to cut into the nail.
This is the angle which I sharpen. I start with 3-5 strokes each side. Later down to one stroke each side. I finish by stroping on my pant leg or cardboard, something of that medium. Finish it off by slicing some paper or shaving hair.

This is the method I learned when I was an Army Ranger back in the 80's.
