Which one should I get first?

Hi Guys,

I wanted some input on which Becker to get first- my goal is to have the BK11, BK2, BK3, and BK9 within the next 3 months. This knife will be tagging along with me on my trip to Utah. The area is going to be pretty flat but plenty of things to chop for the fires at night.

I will be camping with a few friends at a 24hr mountain bike race event, currently the tools I'm packing are my Leatherman Wave, Leatherman Micra, and CountyComm Breacher Bar. I also have a Kabar D2 extreme, but chose not to pack it.

My uses for a Becker on this trip will be mostly Digging and Chopping wood, probably open a few soup cans as well. Although my other tools will be plenty fine- I wanted something to kind of show off. The area I will be in is hot during the day and cold at night- with very random showers.

Which would you go with and why?

Thanks

The BK2, it's a tank of a knife that can also do fine work, not the greatest chopper but it can get the job done.

Thanks for the reply Mechtec, I was sort of leaning towards the BK9, but that would be about as overkill as someone could get for my trip. Maybe I will order the BK2 and beat it up at Utah, then if it seems to small I'll order the 9. I'll be camping for a week in a place that does not have any shops for miles/not within walking distance should my bike get a flat.

So my knife needs to be as sturdy as possible, even though the terrain doesn't have much to throw at it- I'd rather be over prepared. Another detail to mention, is that the knife would be strapped to a Camelbak somehow while riding out on the trails.

I would go with the BK-2 as well... it's very stout and will do everything you need to do while camping so long as you stay practical (i.e don't take on 1' diameter standing deadwood). You also mentioned digging, and I would never use a longer, thinner blade for that - the BK-2 on the other hand would do the trick, so long as you don't intend to keep it that sharp. The BK-9 is a great chopper, but IMO isn't as adept at other tasks as the BK-2.

Thanks for the reply, I'll just order both and pack them with me for the trip. Then strap whichever fits my situation best to my backpack or belt.

Yeah - I don't think it's really possible to have one knife that's capable of doing ALL the tasks that you'd want to do. I used to find myself bringing a convex BK-2 on my belt and a Kabar kukri-machete on my backpack. However, the kukri-machete wasn't really versatile enough to baton wood easily, so I tended to bring a camp ax as well. I recently got a REAL kukri (a 18" 2.3lb Himalayan Import Vojpuri) which now serves as both my ax AND machete :D

The BK-2, HI Vojpuri (and karda that comes with the kukri) make for a mean combination. Here's a comparison shot of the Vojpuri's thickness vs. the Kabar kukri-machete - it makes me laugh every time :p

I did the same and I enjoy them more than the sum of them.
But I still can't decide which to take on a backpack. They are about the same weight; the bk9 might be to aggressive looking and pretty long for carrying on the hip and the bk2 is not suitable for chopping/splitting great amounts.
I thinking of the bk2 and a laplander saw or a bk9 and light mora knife /bk11 (and saw blade for making a bucksaw)

In your case a bk9 will impress because of the size and a bk2 will impress because of the solid weight.

No love for the BK7? It's my favorite. I started woth a BK11 and BK2. Love them both, really love the 7. I have no real use for a 9.

I don't know if I would want to punch soup cans with a BK9 with the blade so long you would have to be square or support the can well or punch it in the middle I'd be flippen that can all over the place,I'd be eating dirt soup.BK2 much more control & it does chop very well.but BK9 out chopps BK2.I say buy both take both if just one for your trip BK2.

My favorite of all, the Magnum Camp, is currently not in the product line, but the BK7 is the one I usually use anymore of my Beckers. Since it is irreplaceable, I have relegated the Magnum Camp to butchering (which it absolutely excels at doing), and carry the BK7 teamed up with a tomahawk into the woods instead. The BK7 is in the same size class as one of my favorite blades of all time - the USMC KaBar - but it is so much more.

So you think the USMC is so much more or the BK7 is so much more? Just curious. I love both my USMC and BK7, but If I could only keep one, I'd keep the BK7.

Thank's for the USMC/ BK-7 comparison Jake, I'm thinking the BK-7 may be my next purchase after the RP knife.

I'm talking about the BK7 of course

It's got a lot more 'stoutness' to it and cleaves much better.

I concur. I like the wider blade on an outdoor knife. Granted the USMC was also meant as a figther, but the glorious thing about the BK7 is that it is wider for more efficiency in the bush, but still a great shape to be used as a fighter.

I think the BK7 in the most versatile knife however if you want two knives the BK2 and the BK9 are a good choice. I would buy all three, then you'll have the BK7 for the days you only want to carry one knife and the BK2 and BK9 for the days your packing heavy.

Thanks guys!

I ended up ordering the BK2 and BK9, both of which showed up right before I left for my trip. So I was very happy considering how last minute the order was. Both knives definitely got a nice workout, as there was A LOT of chopping and splitting of wood- as well as making stakes to hold down caution tape. The edges held up extremely well, so I was happy. After my trip, Becker knives has gained my trust. Next on my list will be the Beck necker, BK7, and Tactool. :)
