Ok I need a folding knife that can take a lot of use&abuse, I have desided against a fixed blad because In so places it mite be more of a pain than its worth. I have a SOG Flash II that I dont care for. so i want a knife that Is worlds better then my Flash. i would like to have about a 3.5" blade. a street price of about 200 is my limit. these three are what i was looking at these three. I live in NH and need/want a knife for fighting(hope i never have to use this feature)/working/outdoors an knife that can cross that line were you would want to use a fixed blad and survive
orany others I should.
any opinions on these three which is? better in your opinion?

Axis lock, bowie blade in 154 CM, 3.25 inch blade and under $200. 720 is an aluminum handle. 721 is G10 handle. 721 is discontinued but you can still find them on the net.

The 720 series are great knives, but they have one of those handles that does not fit everyone's hand.

Of what you've got up there, I'd go with the 520 Presidio. It has a GREAT utility grind, one of the best cutters Benchmade makes. The handle is rock solid and really locks into your hand, although it does tend to chew pants up over time. And it has an excellent point - pointy enough to be useful, wide enough to be tough as hell. As a guy who has broken a few tips in my time, I appreciate this. :D

And if you had to it certainly has the ergonomics to be a good self defense piece.

I actually carry my 520 more than my 710 or my Ares - it is an overbuilt, superbly designed worker. At 3.4", it's even legal in 3.5" blade jurisdictions.

Highly recommended.

I have a BM 420 Resistor with a coated part serrated blade ( the middle pic). I also have an Aluminum Handled TiNi Flash II for comparison. Overall the 420 is a larger knife , its thicker too. The Axis lock feels more secure than the lock-up on the SOG. The 420 feels "overbuilt", but tastefully done.

I own three BM's with the axis lock and IMO they're the strongest I've ever seen in a folding knife, so no matter which you pick it will be a winner. You can deploy the blade just as fast as an assisted opening knife. With practice you can close it too ( without ever touching the blade).

If you want a real workhorse I can recommend the 710 too. The blade is shaped differently and it's a little longer, but overall it's profile is slimmer than the 420.

Of course this is subjective... but for a little over $100.00, the 420 has a custom look to it.

By now I guess you figured out that I really like the 420..... but I like most of the Snody designed knives.

JPD does the 420 have a good grip, that is one of my conserns with 420 is that it looks rather smooth?

Sparten,

The knife's frame is made of thick milled ( I think it's milled and not cast )aluminum with a G10 overlay. The overlay has cut-outs where your fingers naturally grip the handle. The G10 is finished smoother than other brands I own ,but the fact that its raised gives it more grip. The aluminum has a rough parkerized-like finish.

I also think it looks better with the black blade , but the uncoated blade is probably more practical if you're going to use it heavily.

JPD how big is the grip on the 420 like screwdriver handle, Glock fieldknife handle? even a measurement of the width would be nice. thanks

I'll measure it when I get home tonight....

Go for MOD Mark II it is far agead of any other choose. And especially for fighting MOD Mark II is highly recommended by experts, however it is very handy for any other use, just because great handle design. It is not popular because many think that it is overpriced (I even had bad reputaion mark for my MOD Mark II post with comment "Overpriced!"), but when you inspect this knife you will see that it defenetly has more work to produce one.

If you have $200 check also some Microtech.

Also you may look at what Kershaw have - like Offset and ZT coming soon.

Thanks, Vassili.

Here's a photo of my 420 and my Flash II for comparison. Excuse the bad picture...

The frame is about 5 inches long and it's about 1/2 inch thick, but the g10 adds a little and it bulges toward the middle.

If you like SOG, I suggest you take a look at the SOG Vision Ti. Awesome knife with a great lock. I also suggest and Emerson HD-7. I got it for $191.
