Playing around with some ideas going to get a Buck Custom 119 for X-Mas. The top I would call the "modern" version with S30V black Cerakote blade, aluminum fittings, and black phenolic handle, the bottom one the "traditional" version with a satin S30V blade, buckeye burl handle, and brass fittings. Which one would you go for or would you do something different?

I’m liking the traditional burl wood and brass without coating. But either one is plenty good.

They look nice, but (for me) I'd reverse the blade/handle combination. The satin blade with the black phenolic handle is what I'd go for, again for myself. But either way, you probably can't go wrong. What can I say? I'm just not a fancy, burl wood, brass and coated blade kind of guy.

S30V is difficult to sharpen... I'm partial to the 420HC Chipflint style blade for the extra looks for a custom order knife.

I like the looks of the Brass and Buckeye Burlwood combination.

that was my other idea but actually a highly polished 420 blade. Sort of a polished up version of the standard one

some dont like the weight of the brass. I personally do and prefer it visually right now. I flip flop though. something to consider though if weight is an issue for you.

lastly its your knife, pick what you like best.

Coated blade looks more like Kabar and this knife is classier. I like bottom or just uncoated blade.

I like everything about the Top one better. I don't like the brass on the bottom one. Switching handles either way would be fine but keep the aluminum guard and black blade.

I have lots of hunting knives because I just love old hunting knives. In my opinion the big feature of Buck Knives, that sets them apart from all others, is the stainless steel blade combined with the aluminum hardware and phenolic handle. Those features give Buck Knives the “right” feel and balance - I would stick with it for that reason. OH
