I'm on a mission to buy my last knife for the year. Here is what I think I have it narrowed down to.

Large JW Smith 4" Tactical

Large Carson M4 (4")

Phil Boguszewski Wegner hunter with dual liners

Crawford Carnivore

Crawford delux Point Guard (Titanium, micarta, file work)

Deryk Munroe Talonite Chimera

Brian Tighe Tighe-Pan

Use will be general use for just carrying and daily cutting chores.

I'm just looking for opinions on each of the knives and what you would pick.

And don't tell me it's all in what I want to use it for, that's the easy way out ;)

Thanks!

Go with your first thought.

Large JW Smith 4" Tactical

That Carson is very nice too.

Hi Chad-

I would go with the Boguszewski. They have the most comfortable grip of any folder I have held (custom or otherwise), superior steel (BG-42) compared to many of the other choices on your list, my favorite opening mechanism (the Spydie-hole), and Phil's glassy-smooth action. It's a miracle that I don't own one by now..........maybe I'm afraid it will replace all my other folders. :p

If I may make a slight suggestion, it would be to consider the integral-lock version of this folder. It truly gives up nothing compared to the standard locking liner versions, in my opinion, and gains the added security that the integral lock provides.

I'd have to go with Rick (see ya at the Chesapeake Show Rick?...8-10am for me!!) on the JW Smith...very, very similar to the Carson 4 though.

IMHO the Carson 4 is going to be one of the true classics of the late 90's tactical thing; it exemplifies an entire genre. Quite a knife.

JW Smith's knives are as good as it gets; these two knives are a step above the others.

JMHO :) :D

I'll be different and say Deryk Munroe Talonite Chimera. Very aesthetic design - stylish clip, G10 or CF or Ti. overlays. Great blade slot opening. Use it and don't worry about it - nothing to rust except maybe the screws. Mine works great. :)

Carson, followed by the Tighe.

I agree with Chefget and RGRAY.Cannot improve on the Smith.

Buy the Carson or the Smith. But fair warning. pray for a big Christmas bonus, becayse your wallet will never be the same again.

Um...I don't think Carson has been mentioned yet so I'll put in my vote :D The M4 is a simple, uncluttered design but highly effective. Built like a tank too.

I'd also go with Rgray and Chefget on the JW Smith, I'm looking to meet up with JW at the show next weekend in Timonium MD, the Chesapeake Knife Show as well and might pick up one there, BUT my suggestion is to get one in CPM420V from JW, very tough steel!!!

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I was leaning toward the Smith when I started the thread and I think that's what I'm going with.

I like the minor differences in the Smith better, especially the recurve blade and handle geometry.

I may save the Carson for later down the road.

I'm a little suprised no one mentioned the Crawford's or the Tighe, but I don't know why. I have a large KFF and a small and really like them.

Thanks again!

Hey Gary, My wife and I made plans to go to the show this weekend, took a day off work and everything... We've just decided not to go, schedule is just to full.

Hey cpirtle, I'll mention Tighe!!!

I have a Tighe Pinnacle w/ mod. Wharncliffe blade in BG-42.

Absolutely a beautiful knife in every respect. I especially like the very pointed carbon fiber pommel that sticks out from a hammer grip. Good impact weapon if need be. The hand rubbed blade finish is delightful.

Only gripe: A bit small.

Thanks Rgray for the pics, nice to see a side by side like that...
both are great knives and I know the JW opens so smooth!
I know that either one would make a great knife for you!

Sorry not to see you at the show! Too bad, if something breaks and you can make it, look me up, I'll be the guy with the swords...:)

This one is on its way to me :D

Thanks for all of the help guys.

Your expertise and suggestions made the decision a lot easier, but by no means easy :)

Jeremy; my wallet has not been the same since I got my first custom folder from Mr. Mayo a couple of months ago :)

This purchase was important to me because it was (supposed) to be my last for the year....

I also thought I'd share one I picked up and will be here tomorrow that was not on my list... I just kind of fell into it... ;)
