I have decide to replace my tired old Spyderco Endura, and I've narrowed it down to a couple models. Id love to hear your opinion as to which one you would choose, and why........

Buck Strider 880SP
Spyderco Military
Cold Steel Recon 1 Spear Point (Original Japan Version)

I have handled the Military and the Recon 1, but I havent had a chance to lay hands on the 880. The Military is comfortable, and fits my large hands, as does the Recon 1 although the blade on the military seems a bit small for the handle. After 12 years of faithfully carying an Endura daily, im having a hard time finding its replacement. As I said, I'd love to hear your opinions and if there is comparable model that I havent considered....Please let me know.

Thanks in advance...

why not another Endura? Or maybe the Buck /Strider Tarani? The 880 is a large handled knife and with big hands should be ok.

Get Benchmade 710...Its' Axis-lock is pretty hard to beat.

Of the ones you asked about, get the Military. Best weight, and cutting power for EDC

I'll second glockman99's suggestion. Even though it wasn't one of your 3 choices.

The 710 also has tough, edge holding steel with G10 handles, same price range, middle range between between the Buck & Spyderco in weight, with IMO the strongest lock.

Or handle some of the other Axis locks BM makes. You might really like them.

Why not wait and see what the new "Manix" is like or what about trying the Pacific Salt.

How about a Benchmade AFCK? If you absolutely want one of the knives you listed, I'd recommend the Military.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I havent narrowed it down at all, maybe because I cant get my hands on an 880, or and AFCK. Id like to see some hard specs on teh Manix. Some say it has a 4" blade and a 5" handle, and some say it has a 3 3/4" blade and a 4" handle. If someone from Spyderco could ring in that would be great. Thanks again guys.

Chris, as the owner of a 97 endura, can I suggest the Paramilitary? I got in on the passaround, and it immediately felt like an old friend. Get the serrated version, though, unless you love plainedge.

In the price range you're looking at, I'd go with a Benchmade TSEK Axis. Plenty of knife for the price. I've put mine through the paces (and I don't baby my blades), and it begs for more. Ya' can't go wrong.

There are recent threads you can find in Spydercos forum , they indicate Manix is 3-3/4" blade and 5-1/16" handle

I have both the Military and Buck Strider Tarani Plain Edge, and like both.

They are quite different in structural strength, weight and width.

They are quite similar in blade ergonomics and liner-lock operation and reliability.

If you favor carry comfort - with 'acceptable' strength - the Military is the one to pick. I've carried mine for about three years.

If you favor robust build characteristics and pry-bar blade strength - with some loss of carry-comfort - the Tarani is an excellent choice. My impressions of the Tarani are here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=316179

Hope this helps a bit.

I say get the Military. In my opinion, it is the best knife you listed. Trust me, I have 2 Militarys...it's my favorite knife...light, fast, strong and freakishly sharp.

I had one of the earlier production runs of the Buck 880. It isn't very ergonomic at all, at least in my hand. It is meant as a bullet proof, idiot proof knife that will do anything and come out without damage. It does those things, but just didn't feel very comfortable in my hand or pocket. It is otherwise a great knife.

The decision is yours as to what is more important, ergonomics or being nearly indestructable.

Easily the Military. I don't see the others as even being competition. If you like the Spyderco compression lock, the Para-Military is definitely worth consideration.

Beat me by three minutes :grumpy:

I recently ordered the Military. Main selling point to me was the light weight-4.2 grams. Anything heavier and I'd rather just have a fixed blade. I had some conerns about the liner lock, but most on the forum say it's one of the more reliable ones out there. Even Cliff Stamp's review of the s30v Millie mentions how the lock's vastly improved over the previous version. Hope this helps.

I definitely wouldn't go with Cold Steel. They're cheap and look decent on the website, but when I got mine you could definitely tell that it was bottom-of-the-line. I've heard some good stuff about Spyderco although I've never personally owned one...I'm a Benchmade guy. And Buck--how can you go wrong?

I came from an Endura over a year ago to the S30V Millie and I have not found anything else I like better.
