Which one would you pick?

Hello everyone. This is my first post on these forums. The reason for this post is because I need help on deciding which knife to buy. I was set on buying the Spyderco Military Titanium, but then I learned about the Sebenza 21. Both seem like amazing knives. They will be used for a variety of things, like opening boxes to chopping vegetables to cutting rope. Which one would you suggest I buy? And would you have any other knives you could suggest for me?

Thanks,
Balmung2

(I would post a poll, but I have no idea how to)

Price limit is $400. I basically need a good cutter that will last me a long time with hard use.

I would advise posting a price limit, weight limit, maybe blade size limit. Tell us EXACTLY what you need so we can accurately give you the best recommendation as possible.

If the choice has to be one of those 2 then I would say go with the Sebenza.

Keep in mind that at that price range you can get some customs that are very nice though

If you're interested in titanium-handled frame-locks (just a guess from the two knives you mentioned), you might glance through this thread and see if anything strikes your fancy.

You can't go wrong with either the Ti Military or Sebenza 21 -- both are excellent knives. One thing you might consider in choosing between them is blade length; the Military (4") is a little longer than the Sebenza (just under 3" or just over 3.5" depending on whether you get a small or large one). Depending on your local laws and the people you'll be using it around, the smaller blade of the Sebenza may be preferable.

A couple other titanium frame-locks to consider are the Umnumzaan (another Chris Reeve knife) and the Kershaw Acies. Both have blades a little over 3.5".

Going Ti loses the biggest advantage of the Mili-its light weight and carryability.

Get a G10 Mili, perhaps doll it up with custom grips, or get a Sebenza.

Seeing as how you haven't been completely swept up by the Sebenza storm yet, I would recommend checking out the AG Russel/Kershaw Acies or the Kershaw Volt.

Brilliant, unique Ti framelock knives with great steels.

The Kershaw Volt seems like an interesting option as well. I'll do some more research on that one. Unfortunately the AG Russel site isn't working for me currently, so I could not take a look at their knives. Also, if I wanted to get a custom knife, could anyone post a link to where I could buy them?

Nobody knows where I could make a custom knife? And if anyone has a Kershaw Volt 3600, how much do you like it?

Decisions, decisions...If it's up to just those 2, I'd go with the lg. Seb. However, the A.G. Russell Acies sure looks interesting.

For me, the deal killer on the Ti Military is it being tip down only. The Acies can be set-up tip-up or down & the Seb or Umumzaan (Another good choice) are both tip-up only.

Hi balmung2 -

You sure do have good taste in knives.

Any of the three that you have mentioned all have a large following of fans here, and all seem to be very high quality knives.

I have a Military on order, but I have never touched any of the knives you are talking about.

However, I trust the many people here who love Militarys, Sebenzas, and the Hinderers.

You might also consider an A.G. Russell Acies, in the same price ballpark and simular features.

Good luck and please post pictures when you decide on your new folder!

best regards

Check knife laws, 4" blades can be an issue. For slicing ability the Military is great- big, wide flat ground blade can really cut. For outright precision the Seb can spoil you, love the lock up. I bought a small regular Seb ia while back and it's been hard to dislodge from edc rotation; will be selling off a few that are collecting dust. If you can find an older one in BG42 buy it. Spyderco has been making some really good stuff as well. I don't have a frame lock but have heard nothing but good from those who do. Can't wait for my M4 Frame lock Military to get here! One thing is certain, the choices in production knives are almost overwhelming. Add to that the number of quality customs available and it's a great time to be buying knives. Whatever you get won't matter anyway- you'll end up buying several more :)

The two knives can't really be compared, and there is a huge price difference.

I recently asked a xxx vs sebenza thread. After playing with the Sebenza in person etc, it really has a personality of its own.

I think I'll take the military off the list. Not a lot of supporters for it. Now these are my new options-

-Kershaw Volt 3600
-A.G Russel Acies
-Rick Hinderer XM-18
-Sebenza 21

Looks like instead of narrowing down my options, I'm increasing them. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. :)

With the price difference comes a feel difference. The military feels much different ergonomically than the Sebenza 21. I have both and like both. I think the mili is my favorite all around knife. However the Sebbie is more sheeple friendly and it has a pointier tip and in some applications this is prefferable. I really recommend you hold both if possible as to me the feel in the hands is just alot different and is worth thinking on before you purchase.

I would take the Hinderer off your list also... If your budget is 400 they can go for double that and a used simple one is still 550. I played with a small and large sebenza at a gun show and they are really smooth and perfect cosmetically wise but I went got a Strider. Striders are awsome if you want a rougher looking knife.
