Which one?!?!?!

I am just chomping at the bit to get a fiddleback now but i have one more decision... WHICH ONE?!?! i am looking at the bushfinger, recluse and, terrasaur. The terrasaur is the front runner right now but i never see them, the recluse is really really growing on me because I've heard the praises sung on its slicing ability, and the bushfinger is great looking and everyone loves them so i figure it has to be pretty fantastic. So any of you guys used all 3 or 2 of the three? witch is your favourite??? i would be doing mainly general bushcraft and woods use, but with a slight emphasis on game prep as it would probably become my hunting knife too. Thanks for your imput guys!

Justin

I think the Recluse might be the winner in that pile. It's a blend of both the larger blades (like a terassaur) and the smaller one's (like the bushfinger). The recluse has that flat spine that goes straight to the tip. That'll give you a more defined point for woodworking and better slicing while skinning (more curve with thinner blade). Maybe look for one in 5/32nd so it'll handle the heavier tasks as well as the meat.

Welcome to the forums, Justin.
You really can't go wrong with whatever model you choose. The workmanship is topnotch, and Andy Roy may be one of the most easy to work with and gracious custom makers I have ever met.

One thing is for sure, whatever model you go with, you're going to swear that Andy snuck into your house, took measurements of your hand, and crafted the knife custom to fit your mitt.

Incredible knives for sure:)

Well, I'd choose a Bushfinger off that list and then wonder why the Kephart isn't on there. The thickness of the blade and grind have more to do with the slicing ability than the model though. Don't think of the Recluse as a slicer. Its a utility bushcrafting knife. Just like the other two. If you see a half height grind on 5/32" steel on either one of those, then don't expect it to be a slicer. I have customers that love that config. If you see an 1/8" thick one with the same grind, the sliceability factor goes way up. It really depends how you use a knife, and how you sharpen your knives.

big fan of the kephart too, just didn't quite make the short list. looking at pics and drooling over the bushfinger yesterday i think i will go for that one in your convex grind and 5/32.

I've got a Bushfinger, Recluse, and Kephart and love all three. From the ones on your list I'd say Bushfinger. I use mine in the kitchen all the time. The lack of a guard and the taller blade help with chopping on a cutting board. The finger has a bit more belly as well so that might help for skinning if that's your style. Just got my Recluse the other day and have cut a steak with it, which was quite nice. The steak too. The Recluse looks to be a real winner in the woods from the little bit of playing around I've done with it so far.

The Kephart is sweet sweet sweet. No need to say more.

The Bushfinger I just love so much. I don't know why!

They all look so good! i think ill go for a terrasaur if one comes up soon, if not a bushfinger. Thanks guys!

thanks for the thread herpingmad. i'm just seeing it. i apologize, but i am going to pile on here.

i am in a similar situation. i want one knife that will (of course) do it all. i.e. the woodsy stuff, the food prep stuff and be able to be a bird/small game/trout knife to boot.

i love the F2 (love it), but i think the Kephart or Recluse would be a better fit. i am specifically looking for 1/8" and as close to a full height grind as i could find.

with those criteria, would you go with the Kephart or Recluse? or, do you think the F2 would do the woods stuff "good enough"? i am talking minimal batoning, but it will inevitably happen, at some point.

Hugh, i appreciate your feedback since you have all 3. i think i would prefer the smaller blade height of the Recluse and Kephart to the Bushfinger. and also, i prefer the shorter handle length (not that it is much different). but, with that said...i could be persuaded.

thanks all.

P.S. i have always been interested in the ladyfinger, as well. but, i think i am now leaning towards the ones i mentioned.

OK. You want a do all, and you've listred models F2, Kephart, and Recluse. Thats quite a gamut and a lot to ask of a tool. The F2 is a very specific knife. Thin and has a thin tip. The Kephart and Recluse are better all arounders. The linking key here is that you seem like a slicer. Thats good IMO. The Kep and Rec at 1/8" thick should be OK to prep a fire if you aren't wailing on it with a giant baton, or cutting through knots. The Recluse has more belly and less pointy tip. This is the basic decision point for you.

Todd, I'd be happy to send you my Kephart and Recluse to try out if you'd like. Just shoot me a PM.

that's about what i expected the answer to be. thanks for the input Andy.
