This is my first post so im sorry if im in the wrong place but this is my conundrum...

I've heard many great things about kershaw knives...

i have about $40.00 to spend because im cheap and will get a better one later.
My local Wal-mart has a scorpion for 34.99 and a chive for 29.99. these are the only two that i've seen upclose and held.

Which one should i get or wat knife should i get?

btw, i dislike serrated edges (not necessary, its just harder to sharpen), it must be legal in MO, it must be small enough for a pocket knife, it must last awhile, and it will be used as an all around utility knife.

also, what are the different numbers on blades for (sorry but it's late here and i didnt look around much but i think it means toughness or something). Also, wat do the different coatings on the blade do?

sry for all the questions...

I think you mean Scallion and Chive....either way The Scallion is quite useable for it's size so I'd go with that one.

The main numbers on the blade are the model numbers. The other number is the year on the date.

Go for the Scallion. Just don't take it anywhere near the St. Louis arch...sorry, but you didn't say what part of MO you were from.

wheezystuff...A quick FYI about coatings, since you asked...

Originally, before modern stainless blade steels, coatings were probably done for corrosion/rust protection. With modern stainless blade steels, that's not as much of an issue, although high-carbon steels can still rust.

A number of coatings are quite hard in nature and theoretically provide protection from marring the blade surface, but coatings themselves tend to get marked up, although most times the marks are deposits on top of the coating that can be removed.

Some manufacturers apply a hard coating on one side all the way to the blade edge in an attempt to allow easy sharpening by only sharpening the other non-coated side. I'm not sure how well this works in practice.

Some believe there's a tactical advantage to a dark coating in that there will be less blade reflection for an enemy to spot.

Others probably just apply them because some buyers like the looks...I like both looks myself.

Welcome to the Kershaw Forum weezystuff!
From the looks of it, Dave has given you about as warm a welcome to the world of Kershaw as you can get.

Definitely take Dave up on his offer, this way you can put the money toward your second Kershaw, after this one gets you hooked.

Wow, nice offer Dave:thumbup:
Can't go wrong with either one of those Scallions (will Sears replace that Craftsman Scallion free of charge when you use it as a screw driver or pry bar:confused::D)

Oh, and welcome to the Kershaw forum:)

Weezystuff: Welcome to the Kershaw Addiction! Lots of good folks here.

kershawguy: You're a class act dude! Great offer to the Newbie!

LOL, very nice of you Dave. BTW, this weezy fella needs to check back on his threads more often!!:D Most Knife Knuts would be all over this type of offer!! Come back son, come back!! Good stuff's a waitin' for ya!;)

Welcome Weezy,
Jon

Wow, what a offer. The Scallions are pretty good for their size, but personally, I like the mini-Mojo/Mojito. They're the same length closed & open, but I just like the mini-Mojo better (It's the one I have, although I wouldn't mind getting a mini-Mojito.

i have school on weekdays. im a senior and get out at about noon. Sorry for not responding sooner. and the numbers actually describe the blade, not on the blade. its the parts per million ratio. it was late last night and didnt feel like looking around at the time. lol. Dave, thanks so much for the offer but i still live with my parents (until summer) and they would not like a knife coming in the mail. They do snoop so there is no way to get it without them knowing. It's worth 30 bucks to not get yelled at for a few daysIt was an amazing offer though, thank you very much.
Also, i meant scallion...as stated earlier, i was tired and not thinkin straight apparently.

I have decided on getting the scallion with DLC (i may be remembering wrong) coating.
