Which one?

A guy I work with is about to buy a Leatherman Charge. He has the choice of a blade with either 154CM or S30V. He has asked me which one he should get.

He is a State Emergency Services volunteer and wants a multitool to wear on his belt for various light duties that might come up from time to time.

He will also take it camping with him, once again, for light duties.

Which steel would you choose if you were him?

No, I don't want suggestions for other knives, this is what he wants, just which steel version would you get.

Either one would be great but S30V is generally thought of as a step above 154cm.

For "light duties" you probably wouldn't notice much of a difference, the S30V one would need to be sharpened a little less often, that's about it.

This is pretty much what I told him. I also wanted the collective wisdom of BF.

I'll probably end up sharpening it for him anyway. :)

i doubt he will ever notice any difference.

but if you dont want to do his sharpening, have him get the 154.

I'd get 154cm, because I can't sharpen as well. I have two s30v spyders and they are kinda hard to sharpen. If you don't mind doing it for him, then go ahead with s30v.

I like 154CM, but I like S30V even more. Unless he is tearing it up you will be sharpening the S30V less than the 154CM. My TTi Charge is used for work and EDC fairly hard. I really like the fact that it has the S30V blade.

The 25th Anniversary Sterling Silver Charge has S30V, which would indicate that Leatherman thinks this is the better steel - but I think he'd be very happy with either. The trick to keeping any knife sharp is to not let it get really blunt in the first place - touchup/hone as soon as it starts to lose it's edge.

I've found both steels easy to sharpen. There's really no difference to me. I could flip a coin to decide.
