Okay, here are your options. You have $500 to spend. You must buy at least 1 knife, 1 tomahawk/hatchet, more if you have money left over. These knives/blades are to help you sustain yourself for the period of one year in your AO. So whats your choice.

Gransfors small forest axe, Fallkniven NL1, Cold Steel Kukri or HI kukri, sharpening stone...oh yeah...and a gerber legend multitool...

I'd buy a good saw & extra blades, a big axe, GB hatchet, costing about $100 total. Then for knives, I'd probably get a SAK Swiss champ, a Dozier slim outdoorsman or maybe a Lonewolf Loveless clippoint or something similar, BK&T patrol machete and some sharpening stones.

There are so many different carry preferences I have, that if you asked me the same question tomorrow, I'd buy something entirely different.

My ideal (more than $500) carry would be:

GB hatchet,
Dozier SO or a Tor or Raven from Ragweed,
Lonewolf loveless or Buxton custom,
big Busse, Fehrman, SR, Fallkniven, BK&T, CS, etc.
SAK

As I have said before, I would want to cover all bases, rather than only have one knife.

Come to think about it, for $200-$300 you could get a small Chainsaw, another $100 gas, and leave enough to buy a bucksaw for backup, and a few inexpensive knives ($100 buys a sh!tload of Moras)

This sounds like a pretty good thread to me, as it keeps me thinking about options.

I originally started this thread to see how many people would buy a few higher priced blades or multiple economy priced ones, hence very few parameters/restriction set. But, what I really wanted to know is who is going to buy mainly utility/survival type blades or combat/survival blades. But, keep em coming....

My choices
SWKW Camp Tramp
ATC RR Spike hawk
SAK (Could be just about any of them!)

I would want the following things with blades:

- stainless fixed blade, about 5" blade length, probably a Gerber Yari or very similar.

- simple locking folder with a ~3" blade. Gerber again, probably two LSTs (one to use, one to lose).

- a multitool with scissors, for cutting medical supplies and gear repair.

- single-bit axe with a spare wood handle.

- a "bow" type saw with a spare blade or two.

- a shovel, just a plain vanilla shovel.

- an assortment of diamond sharpeners, coarse to extra-fine.

This isn't $500, so I'd also get a Haligan Tool (forcible entry tool used by fire, police depts). Useless for survival, but they are cool and I've always wanted one of my own :)
