I have a Spyderco sharpening kit but I have some time off and am determined to teach myself how to use paper wheels any one better than another I just want to buy them one time. Thanx

I'm looking into the Razor Sharp Edgemaking System for $34. I'll be getting it very soon. Just as soon as Lowes get more Delta 6" bench grinders in.
if you get a 6" grinder you need to get the 8" wheels so you can clear the housing. i use a 1/2 hp 1725 rpm motor to run my wheels on and have never seen the need to run any faster than that. if you can get the dual speed just as cheap go for it.
Dumb question: Will 8" wheels fit on a 6" grinder?
Is there much difference in 6" vs 8" grinders? Also, any idea what RPM works the best for knife sharpening? I've seen the 3400rpm and dual 1800/3400 two speed.

The instructions that came with mine recommends 3400 rpms, which is what I run them at. I turned my machine around so the wheels are turning away from me and towards the wall. I'm loving these things.
rayban, turn the motor around and try it with the wheels rotating to you and hold the blade around the 1:00 position. you can do a much better job since you can watch the burr form and hold the blade more paralell to the wheel. i have been sharpening that way ever since i learned and anyone who stops by is taught the same way. vmlew, you remove the guards so you can put the larger wheels on. since there is no danger of these wheels coming apart you dont need the guards.
Spent some time on the link and all I can say is THANK YOU!!!!!!!! I can't wait to get home and get on my wheel:thumbup:Very valuable info man..the angle you hold the blade at is up to you. for thoes of you that havent read my tips page here is the link to it http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=608864 remember to never go edge first into either wheel or you'll have a knife come flying back at you. as for direction most guys find it is easier to sharpen when the wheel is rotating to you and the edge is facing you also. sharpening with the edge down and wheel rotating to you or away from you makes it hard to see whats happening. i would hate to think how long it would have taken me to sharpen the 241 folders i done before the blade show. some knives took several minutes per blade just to work up a burr.
