Which peanut?

So I have been looking at peanut pattern knives and am looking for some help in deciding between the GEC Pemberton and the AG Russell Peanut.

I have never owned or held a GEC knife of any kind but people here seem to like them. The AG Russell looks great as well.

Between these two which would you pick and why?

ag russell has a pinched peanut on there for 225. beauitiful ivory,, vg-10, and clip/wharncliff blades which i've never seen on a peanut. i would never pay 225 for a peanut or any knife for that matter, but just throwing it out there. :p

Not surr if the AG Russel is Japanese.... and though it may be an awesome knife... I know the GEC is USA made... and that alone would have me choose the GEC..... Besides, the gec product is a very well made product.. and did I mention it's American made? ;-)

Plenty of good knives come out of Japan. Even China is putting out some really nice knives these days.

Out of those two, I pick the AG Russell peanut. Reasons: VG10 steel, and a small Wharncliffe blade as secondary.

Personally, I would choose neither of those for myself.

almost everything we have or buy is made in china. be different and buy an American made peanut. it's not much but it's the least we can do. :p

I did say that the AG Russel may be a great knife, Japanese or not. But... the question was which and why. My pick was the gec and the why was because it was USA made. That is my why, and without getting into specifics.. it's only my choice if choosing between the two :-)

You really can't go wrong with either one - both companies put out high quality knives and stand behind their products. On the Pemberton both nail nicks are on the mark side, and on the AGR the nick for the secondary is on the pile side - does that make a difference to you? Do you prefer a pen or a wharncliffe for the secondary blade? Are the ivory covers and VG10 steel on the AGR worth an extra $125 to you? There are other things to consider of course, but those three questions popped out to me.

BTW, I have a Pemberton and I'm very happy with it. ;)

I do have both....and I do prefer the Pemberton. Keep in mind it is a mini tank. The peanut just does not fit my hand as well. If I were a rich man ... I'd take the plunge on a AGR mammoth peanut though. They look great!

I carry my Pemberton every day and love it. Super high quality and less than half the price of the AG Russel.

The Pemberton is an amazing little knife. It fills your hand, despite it's miniscule size. The single blade version might not classify as a Peanut type knife, but I feel like I could do without the small pen blade. Not to mention you have a nice selection of different scales. But VG-10 is a great steel, and takes a mean edge, and offers great edge retention. 1095 takes a cool patina, and can be sharpened on nearly anything. You can't go wrong really.

Mentioning country of origin is acceptable. So is expressing a desire as to country of origin.

The line gets drawn at discussions of economic or political policies which may drive a desire for a specific country of origin. We just don't start down that road.

Don't have either, but do have a Case small coke bottle that I believe to be similar to the Pemberton. I quite like it, as said, it's definitely beefie than the peanuts I have owned. So, that is good or bad depending on what camp you are in.

I'm really getting into slipjoints and looking for an EDC that won't get the wrong attention in the office so the peanut seems just right.

As far as price either is more than I would normally spend but I am looking for something my wife can get me for our anniversary.

I appreciate the feedback from everyone.

The AG Russell Peanut is a real jewel. As expensive as a jewel, too. If it has the same outstanding finish as my AG Dogleg Trapper (custom level, indeed), it's actually worth to be considered. I understand it is made by the same Japanese manufacturer. I love the secondary Wharncliffe blade. If you like a Wharnie as secondary, Case makes a Mini Trapper that's only a tiny little bit bigger than a Peanut (and a Tiny Trapper that is about the same size).
