Assuming the Lansky PS-MED01 and the Smith's PP1 are both good models which of the two is the better to use? Other than the option of the ceramic sharpener for serrated blades and the overall weight I'm not seeing much difference in the two, and I don't see why the diamond tapered rod couldn't be used for the serrations.

As many can tell I'm new to the game.

What are you sharpening with them? The carbides are never suggested but work in last ditch attempts. I like the lansky's ceramic for serrations but that is purely preference. Have you looked at just a pocket stone? Or worksharp's field sharpener?

I've got a number of knives available, both plain edge and serrated edge, and if I take them with me to work I wanna make sure they stay sharp. And these two sharpeners look like a very lightweight, very portable option for whatever's being carried that day.

Have you free handed before? Have you sharpened serrations before? The reason i ask is to match tool and technique. You can go with the smith's if you really want one of them. It'll work at first, then you will want to upgrade to other things. I use a smiths 4" x 1" soft arkansas for my touch ups. I even use the slightly rounded corners for serrations. It's small enough and packable enough to go in the same pocket and my leatherman wave. You could look for those diamond rod pen sharpeners as well. The rods can be very versatile given the overall package.

these sort of things
