Really like the looks of his work. I am looking for one of his knives that would be good for EDC. I like the looks of the Spook, but dont know how small it is. Anyone have any pics with other knives for size comparison?

Why not an Armaggedon SKS? You got the big knife when you need it, and the smaller ride-along when you don't want to scare the sheeple....

Hi Dennis: The Spook is about 7 3/4" with a 3 1/2" blade. It is available with a multi carry sheath that allows various modes of belt carry and can also be worn as a neck knife.. Hope this helps ya out some..

So it is roughly the same size as a Camillus Talon?

Anyone have any pics with another knife for comparison?

The TTKK would make a great EDC knife. It is an extremely useful knife and a pleasure to use. Mine is 5 1/2 inches which may be a little too big for your needs but, you could always trim it down to 4 1/2 inches or so for something a little smaller.

Dennis,

As when considering any blade, the pertinent questions apply: What's the primary purpose of your EDC? Self defense? Tactical field use? Civilian utility knife uses like opening boxes, cartons, plastic bags, & mail? Do you want to carry larger blades? Is deployment speed going to be important? Is this going to be strictly a cutter/slicer or will it have to pry & hack as well? In any case, which one of his blades to carry will depend on your requirements & the limits you have to operate within.

If your circumstances require a shorter blade, I'd add Trace's LEO to the TTKK already mentioned and the Spook you like. I can vouch for the LEO handle (Warhawk style handle) being extremely comfortable and secure in the hand. For a larger blade, his Tempest at 6" blade would be pretty sweet, but be aware of the recurve blade considerations.

I've said it before and realize that I'm preaching to the choir on this, but Trace's craftsmanship and finish are top notch. Given the quality of workmanship and materials, his prices are very reasonable.

HTH,
Greg

I don't want anything really huge, but would like something big enough to work fairly hard. I think the TTKK may be a little too big. I have had the Gambit recommended to me. I believe it is a smaller version of the TTKK.

I plan on using it for general utility and defense if needed. Maybe as a backup for duty carry or plain clothes assignments.

Thanks for enumerating the uses you have for the blade, which helps focus the search on appropriate blades. Allow me to reiterate the recommendation of his LEO model for your consideration. http://www.pe.net/~thrblade/Knives/leo.htm

Given the parameters, especially that you feel the TTKK (4"-5" blade) may be too big, the LEO model with its 4" blade IMHO should meet your needs for a smaller hard-working blade from Mr Rinaldi. For extreme cases of "work fairly hard" ordering it in 1/4" stock may be called for. Since you mention general utility as one of your needs for the blade, you could consider getting the LEO without recurve on the blade for easier impromptu sharpening. In forward grip, Trace's aggressive jimping pattern holds the thumb very securely in place and the semi-subhilt nature of the LEO handle really plants it in your hand with little chance for it to dance free. Using his blades in a choked-up position is made quite solid by the size & comfort of his choil. For a good picture of the jimping pattern & choil, see Ron Hood's review of the SKS Armageddon at http://www.survival.com/trace.htm

Even on smaller framed individuals, up to a 5" fixed blade works for EDC. So a 4-incher should be even more reasonable. If concealability is an issue, I recommend Normark's (Eric Noeldechen at On-Scene Tactical) high-ride kydex sheaths as a high quality IWB carry option at a good price.

I haven't seen the Gambit. Anyone got a URL to a picture of it?

I really owe Larry at Bladeart for helping me out. Ive narrowed it down to the Gambit or the Spook. This particular Spook is a tanto in A-2 steel. The Gambit is 154CM. I am really wavering on which one to get. Anyone care to talk me into one or the other?

ALL Blade steels have give and take. The 154CM blade will resist corrosion better, the A2 blade will be easier to sharpen. IF you plan on carrying the blade conclealed, and close to your body the 154CM might be the choice, if you are ON TOP of your blades upkeep the A2 blade will serve you very well, and will be tougher, and easier to sharpen.. It boils down to your intended use of the knife, and what you need in a blade..
Hope this helps you..
