Which Scotchbrite belt?

Hi guys, I want to do a nice satin finish on my user knives, particularly the chef knives (hand sanding 2.5"x9" blades is killing me) and am not sure which scotchbrite belt to buy. I usually grind to 400 with gator belts, and want a belt to blend those scratches together.
The superfine SB belt is about 400 grit which would match the gator, but I'm afraid that would give me closer to a mirror finish, which I don't want. Very fine, medium?
Any advice or examples would be appreciated. Thanks

I like to use the fine and very fine for my satin belt finishes. 400 grit won't give you a mirror finish but is a great grit for starting (or finishing) a satin finish.

I have learned not to use medium belts on carbon blades. It just gives deeper scratches for water to collect.

I just got the blue very fine belt from Pops. It is about 400 but nowhere near mirror polish.

I have forgotten the grits of the belts I use. What color = what grit, please?

It seems to me like these belts wear out pretty fast, so I use them sparingly.

Is this correct thinking?

I remember seeing a post from Stacy showing what the grits are. They don't really wear out but they do get dirty and clogged up. Spray them with compressed air to bring them back. Maybe even wash them with soap and water.

I think my scotchbrite fine belt is grey. I use that mostly and sometimes medium on stainless.

I like to use a blue scotchbrite belt after 400 for machine finish knives. Has a nice satin look.

I use the green and blue/grey ones mostly.

Let them soak in a bucket of water and Dawn to clean them.

I seem to recall folks advising spraying them with WD-40 or something to help keep them from clogging? Don't quote me on that, I may be completely off-base.

Just remember you sprayed it when you stand in front of your grinder and fire it up , a face full of wd-40 makes you remember to stand to the side at first.

Thanks for the info guys. I ordered the very fine, which is one step below the finest. Hopefully that'll work out.
