i apologize ahead of time if this subject has already been discussed thoroughly.

i use the spyderco sharpmaker at home; which sharpener would you guys recommend for field carry in a shtf situation? i'm looking for something fairly light and compact (smaller and lighter than the sharpmaker) and hopefully not more expensive.

right now for camping i'm using a little lohman crock stick sharpener and, to tell you the truth it works pretty darn good, but i'm looking for something a little more robust/higher quality.

thanks!

Spyderco ProFile Set ~ 701MF - Personal favorite, smaller knives, folders, serrations, hooks/awls. If only allowed one, this is what I would pick.

Spyderco Pocket Stone (Double Stuff) ~ 303MF - For larger/fixed blade knives.

Spyderco Slip Stone ~ 307F - Convex edges, large knives, etc.

Might want something really abrasive if you need to fix a badly damaged edge, though some people can probably do that on a smooth stone they pick up and then use these ceramic stones to do the fine work.

I've become rather enamored with the 4-inch Falkniven diamond/ceramic sharpener for carrying about for out of house sharpening.

DMT dia-fold's, you will have a hard time finding anything better.

If you like convex edges, it's hard to beat sandpaper on your thigh for packability. There is a learning-curve, though. With practice, you can develop a wicked edge.

EZE-LAP diamond rod .1/4" x 4" and the rod slips into the handle. Mine is 25 years old and still used !

I like Diafolds/Duofolds; they also make a keychain version that's ~3.5" long when closed, with a ~3" length of hone.

Being a convex knut, I need to special order a pair of SHTF pants made of sandpaper-on-kevlar so the thigh sharpener is always at the ready. ;)

for a SHTF situation, pick a stone form off the ground, nobody needs to shave when people is dying left and right.

for normal running around, its more in the skill then the sharpening "tool"
I carry a -spyderco double stuff- It's light and and fine.

Put a "razor blade" sharp, highly refined and polished edge on it at home, and don't worry about sharpening it in the field. :p
