So ive had a bit of experience sharpening freehand with flat stones, with good results, but right now the only stone i own is some old really worn out 2-sided stone my dad had from when he was a kid, its a piece of crap and i dont want to go near my good blades with it. anyways im looking to buy a new set of stones but there are so many types and brands i dont know where to start. most of my blades are vg-10 and 154cm and have factory edges, so i wont be needing to do any reprofiling. im also unfamiliar with what type of edge medium/fine/ultrafine will produce, for instance my good blades right now will push cut printer paper fine but wont shave, will a fine grit produce a shaving edge, will ultra fine polish it? any info or advice on what brands/type/grit you would recommend are greatly appreciated

I would recommend two stones. Norton 220/1000 double sided for coarse work, and Norton 4000/8000 for final polishing.

The 4000/8000 will give you a hair splitting sharp, mirror polished edge, if you have the skill to use it properly.

Shapton Glassstones are even better, but a good bit pricier. However, you can get a Shapton all the way up to 30,000 grit. :)

I'd go with DMT diamond hones: coarse, medium (red) and ultra-fine (green). They seem to last forever, which justifies the cost IMHO. I've used mine almost daily for a decade and they work as well or even better than when new.
