hey, i just recently got interested in "butterfly knives" and would really like to buy one. my question is what is the best knife to buy for under $50?

For $50 you can get a Jaguar balisong. You can get them from the following sites:
www.butterflyknifeexchange.com www.knifezilla.com

Or you can save your money and get the real deal BM42.

Hi, badazz, and welcome to the forums...

For starters, get yourself a Jaguar....once you get the hang of it you will be pheening(SP?) for a 42 and then you'll want a 45..then a 68..then a 30..then a 35..then a custom from Darrel Ralph...

Uhhh ohh....hang on...it's gonna be one hell of a ride...and your wallet will always hate you for it...just make sure you don't get sucked into Microtechs too(but you gotta get at least one auto

Or...you might give JohnR7 a try at www.balisongknife.com

Fast, Friendly and good to business with! He has a good selection to fit your needs. Then when you are satisfied that you can't live without 'em...you can go broke with the rest of us!

Hey, badazz. I also suggest taking a look at JohnR7's page. I recommend the Jaguar also, but make sure you get one of the rostfreis on John's page, also (link: http://home.neo.rr.com/johnr7/butterflyb/taiwan.htm). I highly recommend the wave and dragon design ones. I actually like them better than the Jags, but mostly because it is, in my opinion, easier and cleaner to manipulate (play with). But do make sure you get a Jag.

Hopefully you'll be smart and not look into Microtechs.. otherwise you'll be broke in a few weeks. Yes, they are that addicting.

Well, if you never flipped a bali before, a Jag, Bear, China, or FHM will be fine to use for now until you get money. Then, after you get enough money and buy a 42, you can admire and realize how the 42 is so much better. (Except for the POS job BM does on the tang pin and latch. My stupid tang ping rattles and I'm afraid it'll fall out soon.

Hey Dave!!! I'd send that puppy back! You paid for that quality...go get it!

Never handled a Microtech (heard that they are sweet), but I love my AFO. I mean LOVE!

For practice I prefer just a set of the ole POS China knives. Abuse them till they no longer exist and forget about 'em! No love lost and very low damage to the wallet

I have to disagree about the microtechs. I am getting rid of most of mine for Benchmades. I don't have anything against the MT, I just like Benchmade better, especially if I can pick up a few more bali's with them. My opinion may change though when I recieve my LCC.

Sabo, I know I should probably send it in, but I fear the Benchmade withdraw that I might get.

I don't know what I'd do without a good bali for a few weeks. (okay, I'm spoiled) Yeah, I could flip my Bm10, but I want to keep it in good condition. Maybe I'll just wait until it falls out to send it back.

Tique, let me know how you like the LCC. I'm thinking about picking a new auto up. The LCC's design is growing on me as well as the ATKO-10K. Decisions...decisions

Do you mean the ATKO-10T? The Paragon OTF? If so I would be very cautious, I picked one up a while ago and was quite unhappy with it, the blade had a poor edge, the tanto doesn't have a point at the end, the spring isn't all that impressive, and the safety basically sucks. Make sure you have handled the piece you are going to buy/trade for and that you like it before you commit to anything on that one. And I'll let you know on the LCC, eventhough mine are both going to be manuals.

I've owned four Microtechs...

1) Mini-SOCOM auto
2) DA SOCOM
3) Combat Talon II
4) LCC MA

---
Let me tell you, they are amazing knives....I sold the mini-socom pretty quick cause it was too small and I have big bonned(ok, fat) fingers.

I had to sell the DA SOCOM(what a SWEET knife) and the Combat Talon II(made an awesome sound when opening) to pay rent

Now I only have my stonewashed LCC...and this is one amazing knife for the money...fit and finish are outstanding, and for about the same price as a 42. And btw, I bet there was a much higher demand for these LCCs than there ever was for the 42, and there are NO QC issues.

I got the LCC in MA cause I am in Kali, and do not carry an auto, but have heard that the DA is sweet...I kinda like the older DA versus the new redesigned one...

Sabo, do yourself a favor and get an LCC...you will forget about that AFO real quick(just like i forgot about my BM975SBT)

Tique, I don't think you will be dissapointed with you LCC at all...mine has become my daily carry.

>> my question is what is the best knife to buy for under $50?

The best knife you can get for around $50 is a hand made Batangas Balisong Knife with a Custom Sabo Finish(r) on it. I have some I could sell you for around $50 that have some minor defects in them. But they have a highly polished custom finish that makes them look like a fine peice of Jewlery that would be at home in any store Jewlery case.

You can get a good knife out of Taiwan, but the pins tend to be a bit cheap in them, and sometimes need replaced. Bear USA makes a good knife, and I have some Frost USA knives that I can sell for a good price.

The China knives are pretty good for the little amount you pay for them. But for me, I would just buy a Taiwan with a Rostfrei blade in it, and replace the pins if they should happen to break. The cost is not that much more on them, and the metal is a lot harder, so they will last longer. www.BalisongKnife.com Thanks, JohnR7

Tique, how can you compare Benchmade with Microtech? It's usually people saying they're trading in their benchmades for microtech, not the otherway around. But that's cool, Benchmade makes some high quality knives.

I heard that the LCC D/A had some dry firing problems, but otherwise, it seems nearly perfect. I hear Microtech is planning to redesign the LCC D/A, so maybe wait to get the new ones? I just wish the LCC D/As came in satin...

David, I also wonder if you are talking about the Paragon ATKO-10. I hear Paragon/AL Mar makes some nice knives, although I have not personally owned one. The reason I say "Paragon/Al Mar" is because Paragon manufactures all Al Mar knives, just with the Al Mar name.

KentDog,

The LCC DA did have some dry firing problems and they did redesign it...what they did is make the bolster longer..

If you go to the automatic forum, I think 2thehilt posted a pic of the two side by side...I personally like the shorter bolster better..

Yes, I am aware that they made the bolster longer, and less slanted, but what I was talking about, was that I heard word that they are redesigning it yet again. You can check out the story here:
http://www.knifeforums.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/001252.html

Turns out Tony took some suggestions from members of the microtech forum over on knifeforums.com, and decided to make the LCC even more close to perfect than it already is.

Tique, I meant to say ATKO-10T. Thanks for letting me know of the problems with it though.

I don't know why, but I just like Benchmade better than any of my Microtechs, not including autos. I think the feel of a Benchmade is so much better than a Microtech. Just set a SOCOM beside an AFCK, Stryker, or a 710 and see if you don't agree on that one. Now I must admit that some of the Microtech automatics are quite tempting, but for a carry piece, the three Benchmades above and the 42 are about the best available in my humble opinion.
