Ok, a while ago, you guys gave me the tip that if a knife shaves going one way, but not the other, there's a burr. But, which side is the burr on? And which side should I strop to remove it? Forgive me if this seems idiotic, but have been trying to figure it out through trial and error with no luck. Thx.

The side that shaves is usually the side that has the burr. Look at the edge under bright light too, it makes the burr easy to see.

Here is a simple way to find the burr side:
If you brush your fingers from the spine of the knife past the edge you will feel the burr. Do this on both sides. On one side your finger should slide off smoothly. On the other side there should be a slight roughness as you pass over the edge -there's yer sign.

It is very subtle, but usually easy to feel.

If your fingernails aren't too short, you can do what The Government says using the fingernail. If it catches slightly at the edge, there's your burr.

The burr is on the oppsite side that you just worked. Sometimes the burr is small enough that some folks cannot feel, but will show up as a glint on the very edge of the knife. You may run into a burr that you have managed to allign through the sharpening process but have failed to remove.

If all of the preceding posts didn't answer your question here's the simple answer: The burr is on the side that is touching the skin/hair that is being shaved. So hone or strop that side to remove the burr.

Brian.
