Which side is the burr on?

I asked this question before, but can't find the thread for the life of me. If the knife pops hair going one way, but doesn't shave it going the other way, that means there's a burr, right? So, which side is the burr on? Another way of asking is, which side should I strop to get burr off? I can't feel it, and can't see it, so depending on your answers to figure this out.

Thx!

Slide the edge at a right angle toward the end of your thumb nail. The side that grabs the nail has the burr. The side that slides has the rolled edge. Don't apply pressure. Use the weight of the knife.

Often times, stropping will itself help to reveal which side the burr is on. The burr will 'collect' little bits of leather and/or compound, in much the same way as if you'd scraped the strop with your fingernails (stuff collects under them). Use a magnifier if necessary, and look at your edge for accumulation of leather/compound after making one or two strokes on the strop. The side with the accumulation is the one with the burr.

Another way to see it, use a very light stropping motion (edge trailing) on a white ceramic stone. The burr will usually leave a distinct gray/black streak on the stone.

If the burr is very ragged, sometimes lightly wiping the edge (on one side of the blade) with a damp paper towel will reveal it. The ragged burr will 'grab' some of the fibers from the paper towel which can be seen under magnification. Sometimes, you might even feel the paper get snagged on the edge.
