Which single blade slimline trapper?

Gentlemen,
do any of you have first hand experience with both the Queen and Case slimline single blade trappers? If you have them could you compare and contrast? Also, does Queen actually grind the primary bevel thin on these? Or do they leave a ton of meat behind the edge (don't care about the edg itself, that I can fix). BTW, I know they aren't "work-horse" type knives, and that is ok, I have ones that meet that need.
Thanks!
Steve

I actually like both the Queen and the CASE. The former comes with two bolsters, the latter with a choice of two or Barehead - which I prefer.

The CASE cv or stainless blades are good easy to sharpen but they appear thicker than the Queen. Don't forget the GEC variant the No.48 now also released in stainless. This is a bit shorter than the Queen or CASE, very well-finished but it does have a half-stop and persoally, don't care for his on such a pattern. It impedes smoothness.

Whatever you choose it's a very nice and highly useful pattern, all 3 companies excel in this pattern. CASE cv Yellow or stainless Barehead, the cv Redbone or the Delrin matte finish blades, Queen Cutlery's superb Amber Carved Stag Bone or GEC's quality finish Tidioutes or Northfields. Whatever you start with, you'll want the others, depend on it!

Thanks, Will

Will,

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. Interesting to hear that Queen actually grinds this model thinner than Case does ~whodathunkit?!
And, I really love the GECs. I didn't originally include them because of cost: not because aren't worth it, just that I won't be able to afford them any time soon.

Much like yourself I prefer the barehead models. These knives are so trim and light that adding the rear bolster would be a negative in my book. I think that this would be a nice solo carry knife for around town, or perfect paired up with a large stockman for bumming around the woods/hunting.

Best,
Steve

I don't have any comparison information for you, but I love my Case. I bought it during a trip home I took a few months back from a local hardware store that carries an extensive selection of Case'. The slimline isn't a knife that I would have ever sought out in the past, but I wanted to support the shop and that particular knife was one of the few with no blade play. So despite the red bone jigged scales (which I'm gonna say look more pinkish salmon to me,) I took it and a mini copperhead for the misses. I carried for a week and a half and found it a fantastic edc. Disappears in the pocket, comfortable in hand and can handle a variety of tasks swimmingly. . .

I can see now that this rant won't help you much. I havn't had time to gush about this knife since I got it, and saw an opportunity here.

I do have my eye on a tractor green GEC now, however. And for around $60 it's a fairly inexpensive model for them.

Anyway, good luck. I'm sure they're all great.

Don't forget the Canal Street Cutlery Half Moon trappers. I still haven't handled a Case slimline trapper but have the other 3. They're all a little different but all great imo. Just depends on what you are looking for (size, steel, handle material, etc)

I really like the Canal Street's looks, blade materials, and the price is closer to my limit. But it's got a bit more meat on the bone than what I'm looking for right now, and it isn't a barehead (although the Pinch lockback is ;~)

The CSC is a sweet knife, I sprung for a red stag and it just drops in the pocket and waits to be used. The Scagel wharncliffe version of the GEC is one of my favorites and I've carried it a lot since I got it. I've been interested in the Case and Queen versions too, thanks for the comparison pics Trand!

Ah, I wasn't aware of the barehead requirement... I believe GEC only made the Tidioutes bareheaded and I only have the Tractor Green one. These are among the least expensive GECs you can get and have been much cheaper than many of my CSC. Another barehead GEC made are the ones they made as Scagels but those will be higher priced.

Thanks to all that have shared their personal knives and opinions. I would be proud to own and use all that have been shown! PS, I have eye balled those Scagels since they first came out but could never pull the trigger. That sure is a beutiful pattern!

I have the Case, Queen and Canal Street.

I like the Canal Street Half Moon the best

It is only 3 3/4", Queen and Case are 4 1/4"
It is slimmer
The front bolster is wider so stronger
The steel is excellent, stainless easy to sharpen and holds a fine edge (not as long as D2 but so much easier to sharpen)
There is a lot of blade for its length, which is the same as the Queen and longer than the Case
And you have a very wide choice of scales, from wood to bone to stag to exotic

I do not have a Pinch lockback yet, but I presume it is tha same as the 1/2 Moon

Wow, lot's of love for the Canal Street products! Since I will have to wait anyways, perhaps I just wait longer. Thanks gentlemen ;-)
