It's time for a new Spyderco. So which Spyderco is the best slicer? I know Spyderco does quite a lot of testing on their products so based on those tests which is the best?

Regards,

Tom Carey

Just what type of slicing do you have in mind?
Veggies? Meat? Leather? Rope?

Shabaria, Wegner, Military, Ayoob (based on the Spyderco's I own and actually use). I think the "R" would also be a good slicer it is not a user for me.

I personally like all of the new flat ground blades. They really cut, especially when the the media to be cut is deeper than the blade. Like a long strip of cardboard, or an apple. The flat grind works well as a wedge, and the blade doesn't bind up.

The Calypso's, Lil'Temperance, Military, and Perrin (not a folder), are all good choices.

I still like my plainedge Military. That thing cuts like crazy :D You may want to try the new Salsa. The blade is the perfect size and comes in a variety of colors. I'm sure theres one I missing here :)

Concur with the above:

Any of the thin flat-ground blades"

Lum Chinese Folder
Military
Calypso

There are others, but some are discontinued, so I will keep my mouth shut.

A lot of variables here, but if I had to pick one, it would be the Military (if length is not a problem for you).

I am looking for something that will do well with both card board and shrink wrap. I have a mili and the blade is just a tad thick for my liking. So What folder has the thinest blade?

Regards,

Tom Carey

imho the best all around slicer would be the matriarch/civvy design, along w/my personal fav spydie the police serrated G10, flat grind, ya can slice AND stab if need be,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,had a millie and they are good too, just like the police better, as long as w/G10, do not like alum handles they scratch tooooo easy (all metal handles do, imho)

Tom, for cardboard and shrink wrap cutting (not exactly "slicing")you may want to consider a hollow ground serrated Police. The long blade might allow you to do your cutting with fewer strokes than if you used a shorter bladed Spyderco. Also, although close in thickness with a Military, the Police's blade is not as wide and could result in less drag during the cuts. Some feel that the ss handle is too slick but you can get used to it over time. The flat ground G-10 Police's thin blade may not be sturdy enough for your particular long-term use. If you can find one, the large Calypso could substitute for the Police but I think that based on your needs you will want the serrated version here as well. Hope this helps.

I would also suggest the G-10 Police with flat ground blade. The long thin blade makes an excellent slicer.

There are three spyderco's that are excellent slicers......If
you pay attention to edge geometery.

1.) The Large Calypso. This knife is almost as sharp as a
doctors scapel. It is a fearsome slicer!!!!!

2.) The Police in flat grind. Long thin blade makes it almost
as good as the Calypso.

3.) The Military in plain edge. A super strong flat grind workin'
knife that will hold it's own against the rest of the pack.

For slicin' the best edge is always a thin flat grind in a good not
to hard steel.

I don't own one, but how about the Catcherman folding fillet-knife?

Good luck,
Allen.

You might want to try a Merlin, either the plain edge or serrated should work for cardboard and plastic. The Merlins have a slightly thinner blade than the Harpy. These things were made for pull-cuts!

As Tightwad mentioned..., the large Calypso is a scary slicer!!! I suppose even the term "slicing" can be devided up into different types.., and all around I guess the Military might be as good as any...<But> :)...put an edge on the large Spyderco Kitchen knife and lets talk <~~~ also a scary slice-machine!

"Hunters seek what they [WANT].., Seekers hunt what they [NEED]"

IMHO, the best slicer is the Lum Chinese. Thin, flat ground VG-10 steel blade can be sharpened to a wicked sharp edge that slices with a vengeance. ;)

Tom Carey, since KBR resurrected this thread, I'd like to know what knife, if any, did you eventually buy?

In hindsight, I somewhat agree with KBRs recommendation--the Chinese Lum--if you haven't yet purchased your "next" Spyderco.

Sounds like the flat grind chinese lum.
The Endura should be also fine for that task, and you can certainly hunt down a flat ground police.

I have found that my VG-10 Endura slices (my thumb) pretty well...OUCH!..

Well if you chose to go with the flat ground police I'm sure you'd be very happy with it.

So what did you end up choosing?
